FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE) – A family’s trip took an unexpected pace toward Kings Canyon National Park after a massive tree almost crushed them, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says on July 11 around 5:30 p.m. a father, his daughter, and her fiance were traveling along Highway 180 near Grizzly Falls, headed toward Kings Canyon National Park.

Officers report it was then that the driver saw a massive tree begin to fall directly in front of them. The father had to quickly decide whether to slam on the brakes or floor it.

Investigators say as the massive tree began to fall on top of the SUV, its branches crushed the front windshield. However, due to the momentum at which the driver was going, the vehicle was able to move under it, crushing the back end.

Detectives say had the driver attempted to stop, the tree’s branches would have crushed them. Thanks to the father’s quick thinking to hit the gas, their lives were saved. No injuries were reported.

“A high five to the driver for his quick reflexes!,” says CHP .

According to officials, the Tennessee family was using a rental car to hike at various national parks.

CHP says this serves as a reminder of why drivers should always be aware of their surroundings, especially in nature.

The U.S. Forestry Fire Department and Caltrans responded to clean up the tree.
