August Alsina Says ‘Love Is Discovery’ And Reveals He’s Been ‘Mind-Boggled’ By All Of The ‘Noise And Hate’ Over The Way He Chooses To Love

Singer and rapper August Alsina appears to respond to criticism spewed over the way he chooses to love as he not only insists that “love is discovery,” but reveals that he’s been left “mind-boggled” by all of the “noise and hate” regarding his love life.

As a refresher, August Alsina’s love life first became national news in June 2020 when it was learned that he and Jada Pinkett Smith had an “entanglement” while she was married to husband Will Smith .

All three parties’ names were dragged through the mud for months as social media tried to break down the information and share their think pieces. Then things died down a bit until November 2022 — when August Alsina seemingly appeared to come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community during his time on the reality TV show ‘ Surreal Life .’

On the season finale, August Alsina shared a few words during his green screen interview before revealing a mystery person on screen. Alsina said, “What do you know, love showed up, but in a new way. I want to share that and honor the person that I love and that loves me back and teaches me so much about love and healing. I want to do that in front of the world because it defies all constructs that one would say love is supposed to be or love should look like.” Suddenly, the R&B singer welcomed “his love” with open arms, who would later be introduced as a fellow artist named Zu .

While August Alsina nor Zu have yet to directly confirm or deny being an item, they are still very much close and post each other often on their social media pages. Just last night (Saturday, July 13), Zu posted a video of himself and Alsina at the beach, with Zu captioning the Instagram Story post, “My lil yea.” Hours before that, August Alsina took to his Instagram Feed to share a lengthy caption about criticism received over how he chooses to love. Coupled with the caption were several clips of his sit-down on Nick Cannon’s ‘ Counsel Culture ’ show — where he insisted that to him, “love is discovery.”

In the first clip posted from the sit-down, August Alsina shared what “love” means to him, explaining, “In simple terms, love is discovery. I mean that in every way. Love is discovery because I think that the issue that we run into with love and relationships a lot of times is that people try to put a finite definition on something that’s actually infinite. So, you constantly are discovering something new about love through your own experience — whether it’s you experiencing a friend, experiencing a romantic relationship, or something with your kids, it’s something that’s forever unfolding. And through that unfolding experience, there’s also parts of you that start to unfold, too.”

When asked how he “gave himself permission to go on that discovery journey,” Alsina replied, “Really, it’s more simple than one would think. Basically, what it is is me having to choose self. It’s really me looking at my reflection and saying, ‘Well, here it is presented in front of you. Are you willing to choose yourself? Do you have enough self-love, enough self-respect to choose you above all else?’ Every soul in this room, you all have an individual journey that your soul is playing out in each and every role that has nothing to do with you and also everything to do with you at the same time. People don’t know how deep you are. People just see this two-dimensional image.”

In another clip, Alsina says, “…you can’t take it personal because we haven’t all been exposed to the same things. People have a very monolithic way of viewing things — whether it becomes… it’s to love, a relationship, or how you should raise your kids, or how many kids and baby mamas you should or shouldn’t have.” Alsina adds, “People would like things to be more uniform,” before Cannon interjects, “for their own understanding.”

In his caption to all of the videos, August Alsina clapped back at all of the “noise and hate” over how he chooses to love. He began, “I’d love to hear from you… your perception of love and how it has been reflected back to you below. It’s weird for me because when I think about all the public adversity around the name ‘August’ … it solely has been spewed simply from the way I love. To think that the simple art of one’s own authentic-love, can breed so much noise and hate simply because it doesn’t align with the minds of others, was mind-boggling to me for quite some time.”

Trying to explain all of the “noise and hate” he receives regarding his love life, August Alsina continued, “Maybe because love is truth, maybe because love is sometimes reckless? BUT that’s exactly what the love of GOD is! So… GOD is LOVE & LOVE is GOD. So… for me, I believe that. If life is but a question… (?) One must have the courage to find the answer. The in-between exploration of that is called living. Living to love. & Loving to live, as Love breeds new life. Last slide is, y’all just being HELL but I can laugh at myself.
