WILKES BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— There are more questions than answers in the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Trump.

28/22 News spoke with Wyoming County District Attorney Joe Peters, who is a former federal prosecutor.

Three victims identified in Trump rally shooting

Peters also worked under presidents Clinton and Bush, and often worked with Secret Service.

“What we don’t know is how did that assailant get on that roof. Was he there from the beginning? Probably not. Did he break into that building and shelter in place overnight? We don’t know that,” stated Peters.

The investigation into what led up to the attempted assassination of former President Trump continues.

Gunfire broke out Saturday evening at a Trump rally in Butler County. The former president was grazed by the bullet.

Another person attending the rally was killed and two others wounded.

Tonight the I-team’s Andy Mehalshick talks with a local prosecutor about the investigation and what we can expect in the days and weeks ahead.

Eyewitnesses describe it as pure chaos. Gunfire erupts at a rally for president trump on Saturday. The president is wounded and rushed off the stage.

As the FBI investigates, people around the world are still trying to figure out how this could happen. Wyoming County District Attorney Joe Peters is a former federal prosecutor and worked within the Clinton and Bush administrations. He says the investigation will be methodical and won’t be rushed.

“Well the Secret Service and the FBI, who will take the lead in this investigation, will be analyzing any video they can grab, which might lend some vision into what happened. Everybody there had a camera in their phones so there is a plethora of video,” stated Peters.

The FBI says 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots at the former president from the roof of a building located about 150 yards away. The motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.

“There was a failing. Now it’s easy to be an arm chair quarterback now until we know everything,” noted Peters.

Peters says the FBI will get answers to the questions being raised about how Crooks was able to open fire on the Trump rally.

“How did that assailant get on that roof? Was he there from the beginning. Probably not. Did he break into that building and shelter in place overnight. We don’t know that,” explained Peters.

The FBI is still currently investigating the matter and there is no timeline on when more information will come available.
