(FOX40.COM) — Free plans for independent living facilities are now available to those who live in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County , thanks to a grant awarded to the county by the State Department of Housing and Community Development.

The facilities, known as accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, are housing accommodations attached to lots of land that already contain a home or a proposed home. In the ADUs, occupants will be able to sleep, eat, cook, and have access to working sanitation services.

Sacramento County recently announced a selection of “shelf-ready” ADU plans are now available, including studios/one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. The studio/one-bedroom units will be 460-sq. ft, the two-bedroom units will be 870 and 1,000 sq. ft, and the three-bedroom units will be 1,184 sq. ft.

The county adds that the ADU plans “meet all of the 2022 Residential Building Code requirements and come pre-approved by the Building Permits and Inspection Division of the Department of Community Development.”

Officials say this allows the permit process to move faster and also saves money for those interested in owning an ADU.

Troy Givans, Sacramento County’s community development director, said the units will also “support the growth of vibrant, well-planned communities.”

Anyone looking to apply for an ADU will be asked to submit a site plan to show where on the property the unit will be placed. “Modifications to the pre-approved plans are not allowed,” Sacramento County said.
