Beyond that, Harry recently faced criticism after he was announced as the winner of the Pat Tillman award, which he accepted at this year’s ESPYs for his work on the Invictus Games. But Tillman’s own mother, Mary Tillman, disagreed with the decision to give Harry the award — and vocalized it. “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award,” she told Daily Mail .

Former royal butler Grant Harrold told the New York Post that he thinks Harry and Meghan are doing their best to ignore the haters. “I’m sure they’ll be drowning out the outside noise by continuing with their normal and everyday life and trying not to turn on the television, or read the papers as much,” he said. Harrold even suspected Harry might decline the award, — which he did not end up doing — and added that Harry is likely “feeling quite sad” about the backlash.

The Pat Tillman award is named after Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who enlisted in the military after the September 11 attacks and was ultimately killed in friendly fire overseas in 2004. The award is meant to honor outstanding service men and women — for example, last year, the award was given to the first responders who saved Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin’s life after he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest mid-game.

This year, Harry was honored for the work he has done by empowering injured or sick service members through sports; the Invictus Games is an event held every other summer.
