    Coles County Animal Shelter alerts locals to text message scam

    CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Coles County Animal Shelter is bringing attention to a recent scam that has been circulating through text messages.

    Illinois Tollway warns of I-PASS text message scam

    They said a scammer has been reaching out to locals, claiming to be a staff member with the shelter. The scammer will then request to send a six-digit code as “verification” of pet ownership. In the below image, the scammer poses as “Officer Deanna VanHook” and claims to have found the recipient’s lost dog.

    The shelter clarified that they will never contact anyone over text nor make anyone send information over text. They urge people to stay vigilant when it comes to scammers.
