    Pirates draft high school prospect in 1st round

    Fort Worth, Texas (WKBN) – The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Louisiana State commit Konnor Griffin with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday evening at the Cowtown Coliseum in Forth Worth, Texas.

    Griffin was the No. 9-rated draft prospect, according to MLB.com.

    The first-round selection is a recent high school graduate of Jackson Preparatory School in Jackson Mississippi. Griffin is the first high school player selected in the 2024 MLB Draft.

    Griffin won the 2024 Gatorade National Player of the Year. He also led his high school to three state championships.

    The 18-year-old bats right handed and can play shortstop or outfield.

    This past season, Griffin posted 87 stolen bases in 88 attempts.
