WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — An apartment fire in West Valley City on Sunday affected about 12 units — and displaced approximately 30 people, according to the West Valley City Fire Dept.

Battalion Chief Scott Hall of West Valley City Fire told ABC4.com that crews were called about the fire around 11 a.m. on Sunday. The fire started in the attic space of a building in an apartment complex on South Redwood Road, according to Hall.

Hall said crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but 12 apartments were damaged after the incident. Of the damaged apartments, two had fire damage, two had water damage, and eight had smoke damage.

One of the apartments was deemed a total loss, the blaze causing an estimated $300,000 in damages, according to Hall.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents, but several residents were displaced. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Utah responded to the scene to assist some of the displaced individuals.

“The Red Cross will help address the immediate needs of the residents affected by the fire, ensuring they have access to essential items such as clothing and food, replacement of prescription medicines and a safe place to stay,” the Red Cross said in a press release.

If you are affected by a home fire, the Red Cross said you can call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for assistance.

The Red Cross has also offered some tips for fire safety , as well as some guidance for how to deal with a fire starting in your home.

The Red Cross encourages you to install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside bedrooms and near sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should be tested every month, and the batteries should be replaced if the alarms are not working.

In the event of a fire, the Red Cross said you may have as little as two minutes to escape.

“Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year,” the Red Cross said.

If there is a fire in your home, the Red Cross said you should get out of the house and stay out of it — you should not go back inside for anything else.
