Across Iowa, political leaders from both sides of the aisle expressed their dismay and condolences over the events at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania Saturday.

State of play: Gov. Kim Reynolds said the shooting marked a "dark day in American history" and that she still plans to attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee — which will proceed as planned this week with heightened security.

    • "As President Trump showed when he walked off the stage, we will not cower to such terror," Reynolds said in a statement .

Republican Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird condemned the shooting in a statement , saying it was also an attack on the entire country and democracy.

    • "This attack was nothing short of evil," Bird, who is scheduled to speak at the RNC, said.

What they're saying: Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand, a Democrat, said in a statement that he and his family are praying for Trump and everyone else "impacted by this senseless act of violence."

    • "Political violence of any kind is unacceptable and has no place in a democracy," he said.
    • Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart also denounced the shooting: "Gun violence is never acceptable and violence of any sort should never be perpetuated against people who are trying to participate in our democratic process," she said in a statement .
