Brie Morgan Bauer has recently returned home after a months-long battle with complications following the birth of her son in February, which resulted in the amputation of all four of her limbs. The new mom has gone viral due to the harrowing nature of her experience and her resilience. Keep scrolling to learn more about what happened and how she is inspiring others.

What happened to Brie Morgan Bauer?

Bauer, 35, was pregnant with her third child when she started experiencing flu-like symptoms at 27 weeks. It was determined by an urgent care doctor that Bauer was in fact in labor and in need of an emergency C-section. This was decided after learning the baby was in distress with every contraction, according to a GoFundMe page.

Beau was born at 2 pounds and 8 ounces, but Brie’s health continued to decline. She lost a significant amount of blood during the delivery and she was beginning to suffer from organ failure. Her medical team chose to place her in a medically-induced coma to ascertain her conditions, and alerted the family that Bauer was unlikely to survive through the night.

But Bauer luckily pulled through, and it was determined she had “Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome brought on by Strep Group A bacteria,” as well as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which can cause “abnormal blood clotting throughout the body, along with uncontrolled bleeding and organ damage.”

Bauer had to go under multiple major surgeries, including a hysterectomy, an ostomy, as well as removing some of her necrotic (dead) tissue and parts of her bowel, which was caused by sepsis. While it was unlikely that Bauer was stable enough to survive the hysterectomy alone, it was certain she would not live without the surgery.

What happened after Brie Morgan Bauer’s surgeries?

While Bauer survived each of her surgeries, something still wasn’t right. Because of how long the infection lasted, Bauer’s “fingers and toes were changing colors to purple and black.” It was clear that she would need some type of amputation, but the family wasn’t sure how much of her limbs would need to be removed.

A vascular medicine team determined they would need to amputate both of Bauer’s arms and legs. But after discovering more darkened tissue, it was decided that more of her limbs needed to be removed.

There was just so much taken,” Bauer explained to TODAY of her experience. “This whole process I’m getting everything cut … (this illness) is slowly chopping things away from me. But I’m going to fight.”

While Bauer shared that she has been coping with humor, she is also very saddened by all that she has lost throughout this difficult journey. But she also explained that meeting her newborn son, who returned home in May, has helped her through it.

“Holding him was wonderful. Knowing he was alive was wonderful. Knowing he was thriving was all I wanted.” But being a mother to a newborn meant that Bauer was wanting to hold her child, something she knew she could not do the same way anymore.

How Brie Morgan Bauer is doing today

Bauer returned home on June 26 after going to an in-patient rehabilitation center. While she has been having difficulties dealing with her new normal, Bauer intends to continue sharing her story and raising awareness for anyone who is going through their own medical battles.

The mother of three explained, “(I’m trying to) look at the bright side of things. It sucks that my limbs have been cut off, but that’s what had to happen…hopefully [we can] boost someone’s morale if they’re going through something similar.”
