Shelley Duvall: A Look Back at the ’70s Legend’s Life in 21 Rare Photos

The world just lost a singular star, as actress Shelley Duvall just passed away at age 75 on July 11 due to complications from diabetes.

Duvall, a Texas girl who was discovered by the legendary director Robert Altman at 21, was one of the actresses who defined the '70s, and with her skinny frame, wide eyes and prominent teeth, she had a quirky charisma that hasn't been replicated since her heyday.

Duvall made her debut in Altman's 1970 film Brewster McCloud and became a muse for the director, appearing in acclaimed movies like McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), Nashville (1975), Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976), 3 Women (1977) and Popeye (1980).

While Duvall will always be associated with Altman and the iconoclastic spirit of the '70s, she had her signature role in 1980, when she unforgettably played Wendy Torrance, the tortured wife of Jack Nicholson 's character in The Shining .

Some of Duvall's other notable films include Annie Hall (1977), Time Bandits (1981), Roxanne (1987) and The Portrait of a Lady (1996). In the '80s and '90s, she moved into TV, creating and hosting the cult-favorite children's show Faerie Tale Theatre from 1982 to 1987, among other kid-friendly TV projects.

Duvall stepped away from the spotlight in the '00s, and in her later years there was much cruel speculation about the state of her mental and physical health.

A New York Times profile from earlier this year revealed that while Duvall had her share of personal demons, she was ultimately doing better than many people might have expected, and was living a quiet life in her native Texas. She was even getting ready to be back onscreen for the first time in over 20 years, in the upcoming indie horror movie The Forest Hills .

Here's a look back at Shelley Duvall 's life in pictures.
