Finger Lakes ranked by their depths. Which one is the deepest?

Summers in New York get hot, which means it's the perfect time to head out to the lake. Some Finger Lakes provide drinking water, as well as swimming, fishing, and boating.

The surrounding areas are also known for their spectacular views.

These lakes are deep, though. One of the eleven Finger Lakes is deeper than the length of two football fields. But which one?

If you fear what lurks within deep bodies of water, these lakes might not be for you. Here's a list of the Finger Lakes ranked by their depths:

1. Seneca Lake

• Where: Located within Ontario, Yates, Seneca, and Schuyler Counties.
• Maximum depth: 618 feet.

Seneca Lake is the deepest of all the Finger Lakes and could fit the width of more than three American Football fields measuring 160 feet. Because of its extreme depths, the lake reportedly only completely freezes, on average, once a century. According to the Finger Lakes website, the last time Seneca Lake froze over was in 1912.

2. Cayuga Lake

• Where: Located within Tompkins, Cayuga, and Seneca Counties.
• Maximum depth: 435 feet.

Cayuga Lake is the longest and second deepest of the Finger Lakes. According to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, it is home to cold and warm water species.

3. Skaneateles Lake

• Where: Located within Onondaga, Cortland, and Cayuga Counties.
• Maximum depth: 300 feet.

Skaneateles means "long lake" in the Iroquois language. It is one of the cleaner Finger Lakes, and according to the DEC, some local communities will pull their drinking water straight from the lake.

4. Canandaigua Lake

• Where: Within Ontario and Yates Counties.
• Maximum depth: 276 feet.

Canandaigua Lake is referred to as "The Chosen Spot" by Native Americans. According to the Finger Lakes website, the lake provides drinking water for 70,000 residents and is home to Skenoh Island, only one of two islands within the Finger Lakes.

5. Keuka Lake

• Where: Located within Yates and Steuben Counties.
• Maximum depth: 183 feet.

Shaped like the letter Y, Keuka Lake is the third largest out of the Finger Lakes.

6. Owasco Lake

• Where: Located within Cayuga County.
• Maximum depth: 177 feet (more than the width of an American football field of about 160 feet.)

According to the DEC, Owasco Lake has a large drainage basin-to-surface ratio, which accounts for its high nutrient loading.

7. Canadice Lake

• Where: Located within Ontario County.
• Maximum depth: 95 feet.

Canadice Lake is the smallest of the Finger Lakes. According to the Finger Lakes website, It has been a water reservoir for the City of Rochester since 1876, leaving its shoreline undeveloped.

8. Hemlock Lake

• Where: Located within Livingston and Ontario Counties.
• Maximum depth: 91 feet.

Hemlock Lake is also a water reservoir for the City of Rochester, leaving its undeveloped shoreline.

9. Otisco Lake

• Where: Located within Onondaga County.
• Maximum depth: 76 feet.

According to the DEC, Otisco Lake is unique compared to the other Finger Lakes as it's divided into two distinct basins by a causeway at the south end.

10. Conesus Lake

• Where: Located within Livingston County.
• Maximum depth: 66 feet.

Conesus Lake supplies water to the residents of Avon and Geneseo.

11. Honeoye Lake

• Where: Located within Ontario County.
• Maximum depth: 30 feet.

Honeoye Lake ranks last in-depth out of the 11 Finger Lakes. It is highly regarded as a fishing lake.
