We rank the top 65 boys in Delaware high school sports for 2023-24

2 days agoWith summer in full swing, it's time to close the book on the year of high school sports.
Here is our ranking of the top 65 girls from the past school year. Every athlete played a key role on the state's most successful squads or stood out to the coaches and media members that select the All-State teams. Some of them thrived in multiple sports, requiring different skills.
65. Jayden Taylor, jr., Sanford
Taylor earned second team All-State honors playing center for Sanford's 16-4 boys basketball team.
64. Anai Burney-Green, jr., Middletown
Burney-Green owned the 200, winning the event in Division I at the state meet, at Meet of Champions, and the indoor state meet. He ran the second turn on Middletown's 4x100 that ran 42.14 at Meet of Champions, which is tied for sixth on the state all-time performance list. He also contributed to Middletown's football team.
63. Rahshan LaMons, sr., Tatnall
After taking over the quarterback role early in the season, LaMons led Tatnall to the Class 1A state championship. The state's coaches voted him Class 1A Offensive Player of the Year.
62. Jamie Brinsfield, so., Tower Hill
Brinsfield won the 200-yard freestyle and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle at the DIAA Swimming and Diving Championships in February.
61. Tim Hanway, so., Salesianum
A key contributor to Salesianum's swimming and diving team state championship, Hanway won the 500-yard freestyle and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle at the state meet.
60. Ahmaad Foster, sr., Salesianum
The Old Dominion commit earned All-Class 3A honors at defensive tackle and helped lead Salesianum to its first football state championship of the decade.
59. Kevon Moore-Briddell, sr., Sussex Central
Moore-Briddell earned All-Class 3A honors at defensive end as Sussex Central reached the Class 3A semifinals.
58. M.J. Hoban, sr., Sanford
At the swimming state meet, Hoban won the 50-yard freestyle and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
57. Reid Maas, jr., Salesianum
Maas helped lead Salesianum boys volleyball to a 20-0 record and its first state championship . He was one of three Sallies players selected to the All-State first team.
56. Talan Stephens, sr., Cape Henlopen
A key player for the 14-3 Vikings boys volleyball team, Stephens earned first team All-State honors .
55. Jaylin Horsey, sr., William Penn
A first team All-State selection , Horsey led William Penn's boys basketball team to a 16-4 regular-season record.
54. Anthony Hatch, sr., Caesar Rodney
With Hatch as a key piece, Caesar Rodney baseball went 13-5 in the regular season before winning three consecutive tournament games to reach the state championship. Hatch made the All-State first team as a utility player.
53. Gavin Newcombe, jr., Charter of Wilmington
Newcombe made the boys soccer Top XI team and earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as Charter of Wilmington went 14-3 and reached the semifinals of the DIAA Division I tournament.
52. Jack Schell, sr., Cape Henlopen
Schell was named a USA Lacrosse All-American and was selected to the All-State first team . Cape Henlopen reached the lacrosse state title game for the fifth straight year.
51. Austin Troyer, sr., Middletown
After leading Middletown to a 7-3 regular-season record and an appearance in the semifinals of the DIAA Class 3A Tournament, Troyer earned first team All-Class 3A honors at quarterback. He is a preferred walk-on at Delaware.
50. Ben Pizarro, jr., Tatnall
Pizarro won the 1,600 and 3,200 in Division II at the spring state meet and won the 3,200 at the Meet of Champions. Trailing Salesianum's Ethan Walther on his 1,600 state record run at the New Castle County meet, Pizarro ran 4:13.65, eighth on the state all-time performance list.
49. Isaac Terhune, sr., Cape Henlopen
Terhune earned first team All-State honors at second base after helping lead Cape Henlopen to a 16-2 regular-season record.
48. Ja'kai Robinson, sr., Dickinson
Robinson vaulted to sixth in the 400 on the state all-time performance list with his winning time of 47.62 at the Meet of Champions. Robinson also anchored Dickinson's 4x400 relay, which was the fastest in the state this year, and won the 200 in Division II at the state meet.
47. Cardin Benjamin, jr., Cape Henlopen
Benjamin made the boys soccer Top XI team and earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors in the fall. On the track in the spring, he ran times inside the top 15 in the state this year in the 800 and 1,600 and helped Cape Henlopen to a second-place finish in Division I at the state meet .
46. Jazonte Levan, sr., Seaford
A year after setting the 200 state record, Levan was hampered by injury, but was still among the state's best sprinters. The Southern California commit ran the state's fastest wind-legal times in the 100 (10.73) and 200 (21.26). At the state meet in Division II, he won the 100 and ran on Seaford's winning 4x100 relay.
45. Brian Fleming, sr., Cape Henlopen
The VCU commit was selected as a first team All-State outfielder . He helped Cape Henlopen to a 16-2 regular-season record and the third seed in the DIAA tournament.
44. Malachi Stratton, jr., Sussex Central
At the DIAA individual wrestling finals in March , Stratton grinded out a 3-2 decision over Sussex Tech's Anthony Andrews at 120 pounds to become the state's 42nd three-time champion.
43. Riley Buzby, jr., Appoquinimink
Buzby earned first team All-State honors in volleyball and was selected to the Top XI team in boys soccer. He also started for Appoquinimink's 14-7 basketball team.
42. Bailey Fletcher, sr., Cape Henlopen
Fletcher did not lose a pole vault competition to a Delaware opponent all year. He reached a personal best of 15-1 at the Henlopen Conference meet, which moved him to sixth on the state all-time performance list.
41. Nathan Arterbridge, sr., St. Georges
The Missouri State commit earned first team All-State honors at catcher as St. Georges went 10-9.
40. Denim Perkins, sr., Dover
Described by teammate Dorell Little as the "heart and soul" of the Dover boys basketball team, Perkins led the squad to the state championship, the first in the school's 58-year history. Perkins, listed at 5-9, earned first team All-State honors .
39. Luca Pompeii, jr., Salesianum
Pompeii was named a USA Lacrosse All-American and was selected to the All-State first team . With Pompeii in the midfield, Salesianum went 17-2 and won a fourth consecutive state championship.
38. Mike Stevenson, jr., Dover
Stevenson earned All-Class 3A honors at two positions: at offensive tackle and defensive tackle. He was also named Class 3A Lineman of the Year. With Stevenson helping lead the way, Dover tallied a 9-1 regular-season record and earned the third seed in the Class 3A tournament.
37. Tristen Graham, sr., Middletown
The defensive end was named Class 3A Defensive Player of the Year . Graham will play at Akron in the fall.
36. Sean Duffy, sr., Salesianum
Duffy made the boys soccer Top XI team and earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as Salesianum went 14-3-1 and won a third consecutive Division I title. He is committed to West Chester.
35. Sritan Pittala, sr., Newark Charter
Pittala won the 100-yard backstroke and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley at the DIAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He was one of 15 swimmers named to the All-State first team .
34. Ronan Landis, sr., Salesianum
The setter helped lead Salesianum boys volleyball to a 20-0 record and its first state championship . Landis earned first team All-State honors .
33. Donovan Dixon, sr., Caravel
In his first season racing over hurdles, Dixon this spring won 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles in Division II at the state meet and ran the ninth-fastest 300 hurdles time in state history (37.90) at the Meet of Champions. He also ran on the Caravel 4x200 relay that became the fifth-fastest in state history (1:27.57) at the Meet of Champions. Dixon is committed to Delaware State.
32. Noah Burroughs, sr., Sussex Central
A first team All-State outfielder , Burroughs helped lead Sussex Central to a 17-3 record and the top seed in the DIAA Baseball Tournament.
31. Brendan Burke, sr., Archmere
A first team All-State selection and a USA Lacrosse All-American, Burke led Archmere to a 13-5 record and a semifinal appearance in the DIAA tournament. The Lafayette commit also contributed to Archmere's 9-4 football team that lost in the 2A state championship to Caravel.
30. Jack Homer, jr., Tatnall
Homer finished 3-over 147, tied with Middletown's Matt Kolbjornsen for the lead at the DIAA Golf State Championship at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover. Kolbjornsen won the playoff hole to take the win. Homer also earned All-Class 1A honors at offensive guard and defensive end after serving as a key member of Tatnall's Class 1A state championship team.
29. John Parker, jr., Dover
Dover featured Parker at wide receiver and running back as it tallied a 9-1 regular-season record on the way to earning the third seed in the Class 3A tournament. Parker was picked for the All-Class 3A first team at two spots: wide receiver and kick returner.
28. Maurki James, sr., Cape Henlopen
James helped lead Cape Henlopen to the Class 3A championship game, the school's first appearance in a football state title game since 1984. The Old Dominion commit earned All-Class 3A honors at running back.
27. R.J. Matthews, sr., Howard
The state's leading passer in the fall, Matthews earned first team All-Class 2A honors at quarterback and won the Delaware Maxwell Award. He is committed to Virginia State.
26. Kareem Thomas, sr., Salesianum
Thomas, a boys basketball first team All-State selection, averaged 20.8 points in four state tournament games. He helped lead Salesianum to the state championship game for the third straight year. He is committed to Dartmouth.
25. Matt Kolbjornsen, sr., Middletown
Kolbjornsen made a 6-foot birdie putt on a playoff hole to win the boys golf state title over Tatnall's Jack Homer after each finished 3-over 147 at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover.
24. Cristofer Torres Romero, sr., Delcastle
Torres Romero made the boys soccer Top XI team and earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as Delcastle went 14-2-1 and reached the semifinals of the DIAA tournament.
23. Jakwon Kilby, sr., Dover
Kilby was the state's leading rusher before a knee injury suffered in week five sidelined him. Still hampered by the injury, Kilby won the triple jump at the indoor track and field state meet and placed fourth in the long jump. Outdoors, he placed fifth in the shot put and second in the long jump at the Henlopen Conference Championships. Kilby is committed to compete in football and track and field at Delaware State .
22. Cael DiNigris, jr., Delaware Military Academy
DeNigris in February helped lead DMA to its second straight Division II team wrestling championship . Weeks later, he won the DIAA individual wrestling tournament at 285 pounds. DeNigris also earned first team All-State honors in Class 2A at defensive tackle.
21. Carson Kalish, jr., Sanford
One of two two-event winners at the swimming state meet in February , Kalish won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly.
20. Cameron Taylor, jr., Salesianum
A first team All-State selection at goalie, Taylor played a key role in Salesianum boys lacrosse's 17-2 state championship season, which featured wins over some of the best schools in the country, including Chaminade of New York and Radnor of Pennsylvania. Taylor committed to Duke in September.
19. Chase Cellucci, sr., Salesianum
Cellucci, a boys lacrosse first team All-State selection and USA Lacrosse All-American, led a Salesianum defense that allowed only 37 goals in eight games against Delaware opponents. He is part of a senior class that won four consecutive state titles. Cellucci is committed to North Carolina .
18. Eddie Radecki, jr., Caravel
At the DIAA individual wrestling tournament in March, Radecki became the 13th four-time state champion in Delaware high school history. After winning at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader in 2021, Radecki won at 113 as a freshman and 120 as a sophomore. His latest title came at 138 pounds. Radecki could be the first ever to win five state titles.
17. Drew Duncan, sr., Archmere
A first team All-State selection and a USA Lacrosse All-American, Duncan led Archmere to a 13-5 record and a semifinal appearance in the DIAA tournament. Duncan is committed to play lacrosse at Delaware. He also contributed to Archmere's 9-4 football team that lost in the 2A state championship to Caravel.
16. Cody Popp, jr., Salesianum
Popp helped lead Salesianum boys volleyball to a 20-0 record and its first state championship . Popp earned first team All-State honors .
15. Aiden Gonzalez, sr., Salesianum
The boys soccer Player of the Year , Gonzalez led Salesianum to a 14-3-1 record and a third consecutive Division I title. The Lehigh commit scored eight goals and recorded 15 assists in three postseason games.
14. Reece Dodd, sr., Delaware Military Academy
The 6-foot-8 outside hitter averaged 24.1 kills per game as the Seahawks went 8-7. The state coaches association selected Dodd as the Boys Volleyball Player of the Year .
13. Vandrick Hamlin, sr., Caravel
Hamlin made the All-Class 2A team at wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner after Caravel completed the state's only undefeated season . At the spring track and field state meet , he won the long jump and triple jump in Division II and ran on Caravel's winning 4x200 relay. The following week, the relay became the fifth-best in state history, running 1:27.57 for the win at the Meet of Champions. At the Blue-Gold game last month , Hamlin tallied the most receiving yards ever in the game's 68-year history. He is committed to Kutztown.
12. Dorell Little, sr., Dover
In his first season as a Senator, Little helped Dover to the first boys basketball state championship in the school's 58-year history. He averaged 19.6 points and 7.3 rebounds as Dover went 23-2, and scored 31 points in the 56-53 state championship win over Salesianum. Little was named Gatorade Player of the Year and earned first team All-State honors . He is committed to Florida Memorial.
11. Jeremy Vest, sr., Sussex Tech
Vest, the baseball Co-Player of the Year , helped Sussex Tech to an 18-4 record and a semifinal appearance in the DIAA tournament. Vest logged 51 2/3 innings in the regular season. He went 7-0 with a 0.68 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Vest is committed to Delaware State.
10. Camerin Williams, sr., A.I. du Pont
One of the most versatile runners in state history, Williams in the fall won the Division II race at the DIAA Cross Country championships and took the 400 in D-II at the spring state meet . His greatest achievement, however, came in the 800 where Williams put the Meet of Champions race on state record pace through 500 meters and finished second in 1:50.20, the second-fastest time on Delaware soil by a Delaware high school athlete.
Three weeks later at the USATF U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Williams became the third Delaware high schooler to run under 1:50 in the 800. He is committed to High Point.
9. Brady Fox, sr., Sanford
In leading the Warriors to a 17-3 record, Fox went 7-1 with a 0.43 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 48 regular-season innings. The southpaw was named Co-Player of the Year by the baseball coaches association . Fox is committed to UMBC.
8. Aiden Tobiason, sr., St. Elizabeth
The boys basketball Player of the Year , Tobiason led the Vikings to a 19-1 regular-season record and the semifinals of the DIAA tournament. The Temple commit averaged 18.7 points in three tournament games, in line with his regular-season average.
7. Elijah Williams, sr., Smyrna
Williams broke the 110 hurdles record set in 2019 by Middletown's Brahmir Vick at the Meet of Champions May 22 . Moments before posting his record-breaking time of 13.80, Williams also won the high jump with a jump of 6-8. His personal best of 6-9 places Williams eighth on the all-time performance list.
At the state meet , he won both events in Division I and finished tied for third in the long jump and second in the 300 hurdles.
6. B.J. Alleyne, sr., Salesianum
Alleyne could not be stopped in the Class 3A state championship football game, tallying for 192 yards and three touchdowns as Salesianum won its first state football title since 2013 . The Army commit was named Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year .

5. Rowyn Nurry, sr., Salesianum
The Cornell commit led the offense of one of the strongest boys lacrosse teams in state history. With Nurry at attack, Salesianum outscored its Delaware opponents 138-37 and rolled to its 11th state title in the past 13 years . The state's coaches selected Nurry as Player of the Year .
4. Frank Miller, sr., Salesianum
Miller had one of the most dominant wrestling seasons in state history, finishing 41-0 at 215 pounds. His season included wins at the prestigious Beast of the East in December at the Carpenter Center and the individual wrestling state tournament in March.
3. Aaron Stevens, sr., Conrad
At the swimming state meet in February , Stevens authored the two of the most dominant wins of the day, breaking an 11-year-old state record in the 100-yard freestyle and winning the 100-yard breaststroke for a second time. He earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second straight year.
2. Andy Zhu, sr., Archmere
Zhu became just the second player to win four straight boys first singles titles at the DIAA Tennis Tournament in May. The Johns Hopkins commit finished his high school career with a 61-0 record, joining Wilmington Friends' Brint Morrow (1989-1992) as the only boys to win four championships and go undefeated since the state moved to its tournament format more than 50 years ago.
1. Ethan Walther, jr., Salesianum
Wearing a black Salesianum singlet he crafted the night before, Walther on May 22 broke Delaware's 40-year-old boys 800 record at the Meet of Champions.
Walther's time of 1:49.02 placed him four-tenths of a second under the record set by Dover's Bruce Harris at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field in 1984. Walther, the Division I champion in the 800 and 3,200 , also set the 1,600 state record, running 4:08.91 to win the New Castle County Championships two weeks earlier.
In the fall, Walther won the Division I race at the cross country state meet . Over the winter, he set state records indoors in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. His year ended with a sixth place finish in the 800 at New Balance Nationals .
