England soccer players reduced to tears after losing Euro 2024 final to Spain

England's Cole Palmer was seen in tears as Gareth Southgate's team experienced another heartbreaking defeat in the Euros final.

The Chelsea star netted a stunning equalizer to cancel out Nico Williams' early second-half goal. Palmer had only been on the field for three minutes, coming on as a substitute for Kobbie Mainoo in the 70th minute.

However, England couldn't seize control from the impressively strong Spanish side, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring what turned out to be the decisive goal just four minutes before the end.

Marc Guehi's header was cleared off the line as England displayed the never-give-up spirit that has served them well in Germany, but Southgate's squad simply didn't have enough to win his 102nd and possibly final game at the helm.

At the final whistle, England's devastated players, including Palmer, who was seen crying and being comforted by Dean Henderson, and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford fell to the ground.

Southgate, who refrained from commenting on his future after the match, said: "I think they [Spain] were the best team in the tournament. We didn't keep the ball well enough but we were right in it until the last 10 minutes. I'm devastated.

"The players have been incredible, we've just fallen a little bit short. We had a little bit of momentum at that point. Big chance at the end to equalize as well but, across the 90 minutes, we didn't do quite enough. I just think against Spain, they press well and you have to keep the ball.

"Defensively, we were fine. We just needed to retain the ball a little bit better. That takes more out of your legs as well. There's no hiding from the fact we had a lot of issues going into the tournament. In the end, we've just fallen short."
