Recently on Good Vibes, Director of Editorial and Brand Engagement at PBS Taryn Stewart joined the program to discuss the 2024 PBS Short Film Festival . The festival, now in its 13th year, runs from July 15 to July 26 and emphasizes the art of short-form storytelling.
The theme for this year's festival is "Story Time," celebrating the impactful storytelling that short films can achieve. The festival features films selected by twelve media partners, including Black Public Media and the Center for Asian American Media , ensuring a diverse range of voices and perspectives. The selection process, which begins in January, involves reviewing over 100 submissions, ultimately narrowing them down to 15 films.
One of the key highlights of the festival is its accessibility. All films will be available on PBS’s digital platforms, such as the PBS app , PBS Short Film Festival Facebook page , and PBS YouTube channel , making them easily accessible to a wide audience.
The films cover various themes, categorized into family , heroes , environments , and society . Notable entries include a mixed media piece addressing personal space invasions in the New York subway system, a musical presented by Louisiana Public Broadcasting , a story about a man on the autism spectrum facing housing threats, and a film about a 75-year-old Black man living on the streets of Hollywood striving for redemption.
The festival aims to take viewers on an emotional journey, offering a mix of lighthearted, fun, profound, and thought-provoking films. Viewers are encouraged to tune in and support the filmmakers, celebrating creativity and impactful storytelling.
