Alexis Mac Allister won the battle of the Liverpool players in the Copa America final on Sunday. His Argentina side beat Luis Díaz's Colombia 1-0 after extra time.

Neither man was on the field when Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal. It did not occur until the 112th minute and both Reds had been substituted within the 15 minutes prior to that. It is unlikely that either Liverpool man was truly satisfied with their performance. Mac Allister received a range of ratings from the media , while Díaz only had one shot and created one chance in 105 minutes.

But both will have been concerned by the pre-match crowd issues which delayed kick-off by 82 minutes. A security breach meant that supporters broke through one of the entry gates, leading to a brief lockdown of the stadium. Mac Allister’s mother Silvina was caught up in the chaos , describing conditions as “inhumane”. She also explained that her son went to assist her.

"Alexis had to leave the locker room to help us get in because he was worried. I thought [the game] couldn't continue," she said (via ESPN ). "I thought the game wouldn't be played because if the players thought they would resolve this, impossible that it would be played. It was inhumane. We are okay.

"We were in communication with Alexis the whole time, but he said he would stay outside until we would come in. He waited for us until we came in. We hugged him once inside, left him to be calm and told him to win,” she added, in a video which was shared by TyC Sports.

It has been reported that an estimated 7,000 ticketless fans gained entry, which resulted in the lockdown of the stadium. But gates had to be reopened as supporters at the front of the queue were beginning to be crushed by those behind them.

"In collaboration with CONMEBOL and law enforcement officers, the decision was made to open the stadium gates for a short period of time to all fans in order to prevent stampedes and serious injury at the perimeter,” a spokesman for the Hard Rock Stadium said. “There was serious concern of fans being crushed in an attempt to enter." It sounds miraculous that nobody was seriously injured.

Liverpool.com says: With his family caught up in the ugly scenes, it is no surprise that Mac Allister felt he had to do something to help them. It is a mark of the man that he was able to put his loved ones first and still contribute to a win for Argentina.
