PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — It’s going to be hot today, with near-record high temperatures.

The record is 97°, set in 1915 and that is the forecast high for today.  We’ll have mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and just a 20% chance of pop-up showers and thunderstorms.

Once the sun sets, any showers on the radar will fizzle out.  We’re going to be able to enjoy mostly clear skies overnight with lows in the mid-70s.

Tuesday brings another day of heat with a high of 96°, but we’ll also have a better chance of rain as the probability rises to 40%.  High temperatures on Wednesday will top out around 93°, with a 60% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

An approaching cold front is going to be a game-changer for the rest of the week.

The front is forecast to cross the Piedmont early in the day on Thursday, and with it comes an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures on Thursday will cool to the mid-80s and stay in the lower- to mid-80s through the weekend.

The front is expected to stall out across the Piedmont Friday before gradually washing out this weekend.  Friday through Sunday, the chance of rain will be between 50% and 70%.  Total rainfall for the week will range between 1″ and 2″.
