From an early age, Jerome Sahyoun has been on the move. As a child, he could fish offshore in Morocco (sometimes alone) and hunt wild boars with his family. Later in his 20s, he worked odd jobs as an underwater construction diver and hunting guide operator, and in a few restaurants and a mixed martial arts studio. All for the purpose of chasing waves, no matter how far across the globe.

These days Jerome is a standout slab surfer at home and abroad. He caught one of the heaviest barrels of the day at a remote South Australia behemoth on the same day Dylan Longbottom nearly lost a lung.

Ever one for an adventure, Sahyoun was the perfect man to lead a November 2023 expedition to a remote, fickle and dangerous righthand slab called Mici Mici off the Moroccan coast. In tow were heavy hitters like Longbottom , Garrett McNamara , Billy Kemper, Lucas Chianca and Andrew Cotton.

Naturally, Sahyoun found one of the waves of the day, a thick square mutant he negotiated on his backside. A wave of unnatural proportion, and more than enough to get a look at the 2024 SURFER Big Wave Challenge . Funnily enough, he wasn’t the only Sahyoun to take a swing at the wave. Later, his 14-year-old son Liam was whipped into a bomb of his own.

Those Sahyouns don’t sit still for long.
