NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Many can relate — you hit your 40s and suddenly, your body starts to change.

You eat no more, maybe even less than you did in your 20s, but the number on the scale continues to increase.

Many assume it’s due to a decline in metabolism, but a large study from 2021 found that is actually a myth.

So, what is going on with our bodies?

Registered dietitian Rachel Iverson joined us on Good Day Dakota to help us understand this conundrum.

Iverson says the best way to calculate how much protein you should consume on a daily basis is:

1.2 (moderate activity) to 1.6 (higher activity) grams of protein per kilogram of weight.

Kilogram is calculated by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2.

    Example: 150 lbs/2.2 = 68 kg

    68 kg x 1.4 = 95 grams of protein needed per day.
