If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a castle , now’s your chance with Castle Overschie in Grimbergen, Belgium, just nine miles north of Brussels, which recently came up for sale . While the seller, businessman Benjamin Van Oudenhove, has declined to share the exact price he seeks, he shared with Mansion Global that it is somewhere between $8 million and $10.7 million.

The neoclassical castle , which was completed in 1904, sits on a plump 10-acre parcel. The site, however, dates back to the 15th century , when the property was a quarry that belonged to a former monastery, the Abbey of Grimbergen. According to research conducted by Van Oudenhove, the monks built a brewery over the property’s water source, but the operation was confiscated during the French Revolution. In 1803, a trader purchased the property and built a large manor house that was destroyed in 1899. Built in its place was this palatial residence, which has been painstakingly restored since Van Oudenhove purchased it in 2013 from the noble family that owned it for 150 years.

Colorful abstract paintings animate the palatial marble entrance hall.

The history doesn’t end there. During World War II, the castle was occupied by Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, and on the day of the liberation of Brussels, the Norwegian air force liberated the castle. According to historical images. Norway’s King Olav V and various high-ranking Norwegian military personnel spent a significant amount of time in the castle as well.

Today, the lush estate is like something out of a fairytale, with a tranquil, tree-lined pond, towering trees, and picturesque gardens. The imposing home measures a stately 21,000 square feet and has 15 bedrooms and nine bathrooms, each designed in a distinctive period style from Louis XV to Empire. As part of the renovation, Van Oudenhove tapped artisans with deep knowledge of historical preservation and sourced antique materials from across Europe, as well as wood from fallen trees on the property. And, while there are several regal elements and plenty of baronial opulence, parts of the home are decidedly modern and harmoniously fuse the past and present.

The butter-yellow living room has a balcony for surveying the estate’s gardens.

The home, decorated with pops of vibrant color, modern and antique art, and special centuries-old pieces of furniture, has high ceilings and massive windows that flood each room with natural light. Spread across more than four floors, there are several fireplaces and many sitting rooms, including a library, two dressing rooms, two kitchens, and a grand entrance hall. The formal dining space can host up to 100 people and doubles as a conference room, while another dining room will accommodate more intimate gatherings of up to 50.

There’s also an elevator that accesses each level plus a full basement with a wine cellar, though the castle was entirely rebuilt in the early 1900s, tunnel that dates back to the 18th century and leads from the basement to the property’s water source. And finally, the majestic grounds include orchards, woodlands, a tennis court, an orangery, a caretaker’s house, and parking for more than 30 vehicles.

The property is listed with Veerle Viérin of Belgium Sotheby’s International Realty.
