Fernando Torres breaks silence on Spain's Euro 2024 win with undeniable point

Fernando Torres has celebrated Spain's Euro 2024 victory after Luis de la Fuente's side edged out England with a 2-1 victory at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

The Three Lions had their hearts broken once more having lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final just three years ago, with second half goals from rumoured Liverpool transfer target Nico Williams and substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scoring either side of Cole Palmer's equaliser to hand La Roja its fourth European Championship title.

England had gone into the competition as pre-tournament favourite and despite a number of underwhelming displays, made it to its second consecutive Euros final. However, it was not to be for Gareth Southgate's side and Torres summed up Spain's win with an honest social media post.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "Another Euro Cup for home. Very well-deserved victory for Spain, which has been by far the best in the tournament. Spectacular selection that demonstrates a huge present and an exciting future. Congratulations to all, you make us very happy again. Let's go Spain."

The Three Lions may certainly have had enough talent in the squad to win this summer's tournament but it's hard to deny that Spain were, as Torres said, the deserves winners. La Roja won every single fixture on their way to the final, the only team to do so, and defeated the likes of Croatia, Italy, Germany and France on their way to glory.

Over the course of the 90 minutes in Berlin last night, they were also the better team. They put England on the back foot within the opening minutes and enjoyed plenty of the ball before breaking the deadline within 90 seconds of the second half. Even after Palmer's spectacular equaliser, they pushed for the winner and ultimately got what they deserved just five minutes from time.

It was a devastating end to the tournament for England's players once again, including for Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez . While the latter didn't feature in any of the games, Alexander-Arnold played his part in England's journey to the final. Having started both the opening group stage games against Serbia and Denmark in a central midfield role, the right back was subsequently dropped for the remainder of the tournament.

He did, however, score England's winning spot kick in the penalty shoot-out victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals, sending the nation wild as Southgate's men booked their place in the last four. It would, however, be his final part of England's journey, with the 25-year-old failing to come off the bench against the Netherlands or Spain.
