Changes to Yadkin County solid waste management

With the start of the new fiscal year (July 1, 2024), Yadkin County residents will see some changes in the way solid waste and recycling is processed.

Hours of operation and locations for the Solid Waste Facility on Landfill Rd. and all collection sites will remain unchanged.

A new vendor will take over all waste collections. Triad Recycling and Container Services in Yadkinville, began providing this service as of July 1. In partnering with Triad, the County continues to prioritize the use of compactors to process household waste at most container sites. Compactors remain the most cost effective and efficient means of waste collection. New compactors have been installed at five sites.

Citizens will also notice a new layout at the Solid Waste Facility on Landfill Rd. Smaller six-yard cans have been replaced with larger 30-yard containers for the collection of household waste. The larger containers offer more cost savings, easier relocation of waste through the short drive to the Transfer Station, and less traffic congestion.

Recycling cans at the Landfill Rd. facility have been relocated to the concrete pad with the other recycled products such as electronics, metal, and tires. Recycling at container sites continues to prove cumbersome. In an effort to provide more access to recycling for citizens, recycling pickups have been increased at the sites that offer recycling.

Recycling costs have increased 180% over the last five years. Yadkin County continues to research ways to improve the collection and processing of recycling. Some methods being considered are the use of compactors for recycling or potentially reverting to separating recyclable items as was the practice in the past.

The operation of the Transfer Station will remain unchanged. Hilco Logistics will continue to provide operators, trucks, and equipment for this purpose.

The County will continue to have a relationship with Republic Services, the previous solid waste collection vendor, as they will continue to accept Yadkin County waste from the Transfer Station at their facility in Caldwell County.

As always, please remember that container sites and 30-yard containers on Landfill Rd. are intended for residential household waste only and are permitted with the display of a Solid Waste decal. All commercial waste, including bulk items, house cleanouts, remodeling, and construction/demolition waste must be taken to the Transfer Station and customers will be billed by weight. The Yadkin County Solid Waste ordinance prohibits the use of trailers at container sites. If citizens must use a trailer to transport waste, the best method is to visit the scale house on Landfill Rd. for instruction. New Solid Waste decals are being distributed in this year’s tax bills. If you do not receive your decal, please contact the Tax Office at 336-849-7903.

If any citizen has questions regarding solid waste or recycling, please contact the scale house at 336-849-7721.
