John Mozeliak 'feels good' about where Cardinals are at heading into All-Star Break

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The first half of the 2024 Cardinals season has quickly come and gone and the vibes around the club are significantly much different than 2023.

The Cardinals head to the All-Star Break with a record of 50-46, which is good enough for not only second in the NL Central standings, but also a slight hold of the second NL Wild Card spot.

After starting the season rather slow at 15-24 in their first 39 games, the Cardinals have been rather excellent since May 12, posting a 35-22 record in that stretch, with only the Houston Astros posting more wins than the Cardinals since Mother's Day Weekend.

The Cardinals' 2024 season is obviously a sharp contrast to their disastrous 2023 season, which saw them head into All Star Break last year with a 38-52 record.

"It's been a really fun first half," said Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak on KMOX's Sports on A Sunday Morning . "Certainly, given all the pressures and when you think about how the month of April rolled out, to be where we are, we definitely feel good where we are as a Major League club."

While the Cardinals will be happy to head into the break in a solid position, the team still have some issues to fix, such as the potential need of an additional starter and some improvements at the plate from an inconsistent offense.

However, the Cardinals should get some help with the offense as utility player Tommy Edman works his way back to Cardinals. Mozeliak discussed Edman's rehab progress so far Sunday and said there are two important things they want to see out of Edman before they remove him off the injured list/

"That means from a defensive standpoint, he ready to play whether it's second base, shortstop, center field wherever (Marmol) feels needs to plug and play," said Mozeliak. "From a offensive standpoint, from where he has his timing back. That's step one and two."

Mozeliak says that since baseball is pretty much shut down for all of All Star Break, Edman won't obviously be able to get in-game reps at the moment until the break is over.

"Basically when we come back for the second half, he will have to go back out and continue his rehab then we will adjust from there." said Mozeliak.
