Kevin Costner might be leaning on one of pop music’s biggest stars in the wake of his Horizon: An American Saga disappointment at the box office , but this unlikely friendship might be shocking to some of his fans. Over 30 years ago, Madonna dissed the 69-year-old actor in her celebrated documentary, Madonna: Truth or Dare , but they’ve reportedly put that awkward moment behind them for good.

“Madonna is genuinely rooting for Kevin and his big gamble with the Horizon films, and Kevin has said nice things about Madonna to everybody who asks him about that funny moment in her film all those years ago,” a source told Life & Style . “He clearly has a giant soft spot for Madonna and how she puts herself out there, warts and all.” The insider described their relationship as “ a flirtatious friendship ” that has evolved over the years because “they have both managed to maintain their status as sex symbols and headlining performers right through their 60s.”

Costner, facing the reality that the second part of his Western franchise may not make it into the theaters , is reportedly “calling in favors from all over show business to make sure he gets enough support.” With Madonna, he knows she has his back. “Madonna is somebody he doesn’t need to ask anything of – she gets Kevin, and she’s in his corner no matter what,” the source added.

How times have changed! Fans won’t forget how Madonna made fun of Costner in her 1991 documentary. He visited her after her concert and told her it was “neat.” Once he exits, the Material Girl pretended to gag with a finger down her throat and snarkily said, “Anybody who says my show is ‘neat’ has to go.” Costner admitted to The Los Angeles Times in 2007 that he was “embarrassed” and “kind of hurt” by her documentary moment, but she apologized to him years later.

“She was performing [in L.A.] about three or four years ago, so I decided to take my daughters to see her. I just thought this is somebody they should see. I didn’t call anybody for tickets, I just got tickets and we went down,” he explained. “And about the third song in, the lights were down, and she said, ‘I want to apologize to someone.’ And all of a sudden my face starts to get hot. … She says, ‘I want to apologize to Kevin Costner.’ She just said it very simply.”

Costner “respected” how Madonna apologized to him since it was so unexpected — and that’s how a beautiful friendship was born. They’ve had each other’s back ever since, and right now, it’s Costner who could use the support.
