SpongeBob SquarePants Goes Back to the Future in 25th Anniversary Special (Exclusive First Look)

SpongeBob SquarePants is leaping forward — while also looking back — to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, and TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at the show’s latest journey through time.

Premiering Monday, July 15 at 5/4c, the all-new special episode “PL-1413” sends the villainous Plankton 2,000 years ahead, where he encounters all the strange wonders of a futuristic Bikini Bottom. If this sounds familiar to longtime fans, that’s because it’s actually a callback to the Season 1 episode “SB-129,” in which Squidward accidentally froze himself, resulting in his own journey into the future.

This episode comes just two days after SpongeBob and Patrick made history at the 2024 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, as the first-ever animated hosts of a televised award ceremony.

“PLL-1413” is one of several specials premiering as part of the iconic franchise’s silver anniversary. According to Nickelodeon, additional episodes will feature former jellyfishing champion Kevin C. Cucumber, and revisit different eras of Bikini Bottom, in addition to Monday’s leap into the future.
