Today, Netflix uncorked their rendition of the Terminator universe with the new anime TERMINATOR ZERO , and the first teaser has officially taken off.

Netflix has been on a spree revealing new anime based on existing franchises for the past few years, and today, they’ve unveiled another one that they’ve had baking. Netflix has revealed a brand new TERMINATOR ZERO teaser trailer today, and like many of their other anime productions, this one is also bloody and can be seen below.

TERMINATOR ZERO is produced by Skydance Entertainment in collaboration with Production I.G ( Ghost in the Shell , Psycho-Pass ). According to Netflix, the series takes place after the events of the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgement Day . The trailer features many iconic scene callbacks from the film franchise, including a Terminator eyeing their inner workings from an exposed exoskeleton on their forearm, a massive nuclear blast, the iconic imagery of Terminator units moving down an assembly line, and, of course, the iconic image from behind the lens of the Terminator of their target.

TERMINATOR ZERO is headed by Director Masashi Kudo (known for another anime production, Bleach ) and executive produced by writer/showrunner Mattson Tomlin. The series stars Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland and Ann Dowd. Mattson Tomlin said in 2021 , “I’m honoured that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations, and has real guts” regarding the bold new series.

Like other Terminator productions, TERMINATOR ZERO features a time-travelling assassin hell-bent on altering the future state by eliminating a ‘pest’ from the past and the nefarious A.I. Skynet, who’s responsible for starting the war against humanity in the first place. The key in this timeline is a time travelling soldier called Eiko (played by Sonoya Mizuno) who has been tasked with travelling back in time to 1997 to protect the life of Dr. Malcolm Lee (André Holland), a scientist who could be the key to thwarting Skynet’s plans.

TERMINATOR ZERO launches exclusively on the Netflix streaming service on August 29.
