Kelly Ripa paid an emotional tribute to Shannen Doherty on Live with Kelly and Mark this morning.

After taking some time to address the assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump , Ripa noted that “in other dreadful news,” the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, whom she called their “friend,” passed away at 53 years old on Saturday (July 13) following her battle with cancer.

“She had just been on our show, she had just been on the podcast,” she said, referring to Doherty’s appearance on the June 26 episode of her podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera .

After Mark Consuelos praised the episode as “wonderful,” Ripa highlighted that Doherty “lived her life the way she fought cancer,” which she and Consuelos described as “courageously.”

Ripa continued, “She is just a courageous, courageous woman. A girl’s girl. You know, if you didn’t know her, you felt like you did, and she was just a special person. One of one. And I’m so sad to lose her.”

Ripa then recalled Doherty telling her “something very funny” while appearing on her podcast, noting that she is “so grateful that [she] had this opportunity.”

“I was like, ‘What’s the worst thing about having cancer publicly?'” Ripa remembered. “And she was saying the worst part is that people come up to her and tell her about their family members that died from what she had. In an attempt to — because people want to relate. They want to relate to you in some way. The knowing that she was on borrowed time and people constantly reminding her that their mother died of what she had.”

Ripa explained that she “had found this very funny card years ago,” sharing that she “had been holding onto it for some time because [she] didn’t know who to send it to.”

“And I sent it to her because it said, ‘When life hands you lemons, I promise not to tell you about how my mother died of lemons,'” Ripa recounted. “And I was like, this is the card! This is the moment.”

Ripa added, “Sometimes when you find these cards and you’re like, ‘One day I’m going to send this to someone, and it’s gonna put a smile on their face.’ And it did. It made her laugh so much.”

Consuelos chimed in, “She said she was going to frame that,” which Ripa confirmed, as the two iterated that she “will definitely be missed.”

The two co-hosts also made sure to honor Richard Simmons , Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Shelley Duvall , all of whom died in the last week.
