New York Jets’ Offensive Star Massively Snubbed By NFL Execs

The New York Jets made a lot of shrewd moves during the 2024 NFL offseason to improve their chances of contending this season. Some of their biggest moves came on the offensive side of the ball.

In 2023, all of the focus was on the quarterback position for the New York Jets. Once Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury, Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle torpedoed the offense.

While their performances left a lot to be desired, the offensive shortcomings weren’t only their fault. A lot of the blame can be placed on the offensive line, who struggled across the board.

Looking to shore things up in the trenches, the New York Jets signed veteran left tackle Tyron Smith. During his career and prime with the Dallas Cowboys, Smith was in contention as the best offensive lineman in the NFL.

The Jets were able to sign him in free agency for only $6.5 million, a steal in the opinion of many analysts and evaluators. However, it turns out that Smith isn’t held in the same regard anymore by NFL personnel.

Over at ESPN , Jeremy Fowler put together lists of the best players at each position in the NFL. Executives, coaches and scouts around the league all voted on who they believed to be the best.

Somewhat shockingly, Smith was left off the list of tackles. He missed out on the top 10 but was the first name listed under honorable mentions.

“He’s still great when he’s out there, it’s more of a durability and age thing at this point. But I thought he played really well last year. He’s got to be a Hall of Famer.” an NFL coordinator told ESPN.

Smith will be turning 34 years old in December, so he is certainly close to the end of his career. But, as the coordinator said, he is still capable of playing at a high level when on the field.

Last season, Smith earned a spot on the All-Pro Second Team. Alas, staying on the field has been challenging.

Smith has missed at least three games in eight straight seasons, including two where he missed double digits. Relying on him to play an entire season is certainly risky for the New York Jets.

But, he is someone that still plays at a high level and is a massive upgrade on what the team had at tackle last season. Being left off the list will be more motivation for Smith to prove his doubters wrong.
