The Ursula K. Le Guin Literary Trust has announced the shortlist for the third annual Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction. The Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction is an annual $25,000 cash prize given to a writer for a single work of imaginative fiction. The award is intended to recognize those writers Le Guin spoke of in her 2014 National Book Awards speech—”realists of a larger reality, who can imagine real grounds for hope and see alternatives to how we live now.”

I had a bookish first the other day: my Kindle Paperwhite actually died in the middle of a reading session. I didn’t get the warning notice about charging it either; the backlight just dimmed out and then it shut off with the battery icon telling me to charge it. This would have been funnier if I wasn’t this close to finishing Dead Eleven and right in the middle of the climax.

Happy new book day to all who celebrate! It’s approximately eleventy million degrees in Maine right now, and my brains feel like soup in my brain pan. Thank goodness I don’t need them, lol. The scorching weather hasn’t stopped the critters from visiting. This past weekend I saw my first red-bellied woodpecker, which was so beautiful! And also poorly named, IMO. Its head was the most astounding shade of red I’ve ever seen in nature, while its belly only had a weak bit of faint orange. It should be called the Play-Doh redheaded woodpecker. Alas, I was not consulted. This is in keeping with my opinion that, historically, people were bad at naming things. (Says the redhead, whose hair should be called orange or copper, or even rust, but certainly not red.)

Hooray, It’s Time for New Books!

This spring, Swedish American author Alvina Chamberland released her English-language debut, Love the World Or Get Killed Trying, a brilliant, fiery work of autofiction about a transgender woman on the cusp of 30 traveling alone through Iceland, Paris, and Berlin. The publisher’s marketing copy describes the book as “an urgent wildfire scream-of-consciousness, cry-of-love manifesto,” which certainly got my attention. After reading and sitting with the novel for a while, I kept returning to this turn of phrase, “scream of consciousness”. It’s a visceral, irreverent term that perfectly encapsulates Chamberland’s narrative voice. But what is a scream-of-consciousness book? Where did the phrase come from? Are there others like it? I spoke with Alvina Chamberland about Love the World Or Get Killed Trying, scream-of-consciousness prose, and other works to which it might apply.

I am currently really enjoying the series Ready, Set, Love (Netflix), which is a Thai dystopian romcom. It’s very much our world with the tiny blip that, because of a pandemic in the ’70s, there aren’t many males left in the population. The rare time they are born, they are taken to the Farm where they are raised, and then, as adults, a government-sponsored reality show competition uses them as bait to find a woman to marry. I don’t want to give anything away, so that’s all I’ll say, but it has a great balance of being fun and funny while also using the dystopian genre to throw up societal and governmental red flags and the importance of fighting back.
