Michigan U.S. House District 4 Candidates

Two Republicans, incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga and Brendan Muir, are running in the Aug. 6 primary to advance to the Nov. 5 general election. Democrat Jessica Swartz is unopposed. The 4th District includes West Michigan from Holland south to Benton Harper, east to Battle Creek.

    Bill Huizenga, Republican

Huizenga, who lives in Holland Township, won a seat in the U.S. House in 2010 and has risen through the ranks on the Financial Services Committee, which oversees the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve and more. He has become an outspoken voice on the need to reduce the nation’s debt and a strong proponent of protecting the Great Lakes. He is also staunchly conservative, an opponent of abortion rights and a supporter of regulatory restraint and lower taxes.

    Brendan Muir, Republican

Muir, who lives in Holland, is a former Ottawa County Republican Party chairman who works as a project management consultant and says he is running to represent voters who are “unhappy with the status quo.” According to his website, he was part of an effort researching “attempts to subvert the integrity of our elections,” though multiple reviews and audits found no widespread fraud in Michigan’s 2020 presidential election. Muir says he wants to lower the national debt, secure the southern border and stop American funding of foreign wars.

    Jessica Swartz, Democrat

Swartz, a Kalamazoo lawyer, is making her first run for Congress, having worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and as deputy general counsel at Western Michigan University. Swartz says she is running to defend Medicare and Social Security from any threat of cuts, make health care more affordable and increase taxes on wealthier Americans and corporations.
