A Greater Cincinnati brewery won big at the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship this month. Third Eye Brewing didn’t just bring home several medals, but also the title of best brewery in the U.S. — the first Ohio brewery to win the prestigious award.

This year, the U.S. Open Beer Championship in Oxford, Ohio, judged over 9,000 beers from breweries across the country, sampling from over 170 different styles. Third Eye, which has locations in Sharonville and Hamilton, won four gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals, earning it the title of 2024 Grand National Champion.

    Third Eye’s medals include:
    • Higher Consciousness: Gold in the Strong Scottish Ale category
    • Double Astral: Gold in the Chocolate or Cocoa Beer category
    • Dark Aura: Gold in the Peanut/Peanut Butter category
    • Inner Sight: Gold in the Nut Beer category
    • Chai Eye Captain: Silver in the Herb and Spice Beer category
    • Higher Consciousness: Silver in the Wood/Barrel-Aged Strong Scotch Ale category
    • Groovy Baby: Bronze in the English Dark Mild category
    • Kelly’s Private Stash: Bronze in the Barrel-Aged English Barleywine category
Last September, Third Eye also won 2023 Brewery of the Year (1001-2000 Barrel production) at the Great American Beer Festival.

“These remarkable achievements continue to highlight Third Eye Brewing’s dedication to crafting exceptional beers and [our] innovative approach to brewing,” the brewery said in a press release.

“I am incredibly proud of our team at Third Eye Brewing and grateful to see all our hard work recognized. Winning Grand Champion on top of GABF 2023 Brewery of the Year last year is a dream come true for all of us at Third Eye,” Kelly Montgomery, the head brewer and co-founder of Third Eye, said in the release.

Following the big win, Third Eye also announced it teamed up with distributor Sixth City Distribution to expand the brewery’s reach across Ohio. Third Eye brews will be available in stores and on draft in several bars and restaurants starting the week of July 22.

“Sixth City’s motto, 'We'll never sell the most beer; our goal is to sell the best beer,' makes them the perfect partner for Third Eye, matching our goal and mission as well. We couldn’t be more excited to team up with Sixth City on this next chapter of our journey,” Tom Collins, co-founder of Third Eye, shared in the release.

Urban Artifact and Sonder Brewing were also named the No. 6 and No. 9 best breweries in the U.S., respectively. A number of other Greater Cincinnati breweries also took home medals from the US Open Beer Championship, including:
