No one is in awe of Princess Kate Middleton quite like her daughter, Princess Charlotte. The Princess of Wales made a rare public appearance on July 14 at Wimbledon amidst her cancer treatment. Also in attendance were her daughter, Princess Charlotte, and her sister, Pippa Middleton. The three of them had front-row seats in the royal box and as they sat down, the crowd couldn’t help but rise to their feet to give Kate a standing ovation. Keep reading to see Charlotte’s precious reaction and how the royals spent the day.

Princess Charlotte’s reaction to Kate Middleton’s standing ovation

The royal family is known for their attendance at Wimbledon, but this year it was just a girl’s day out. On July 14, princesses Kate and Charlotte, plus Kate’s sister, Pippa, showed up ready to enjoy the men’s singles final. The match was a repeat of last year’s championship between Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

The ladies met and chatted with people at the event before heading to their seats in the royal box at Centre Court. As they took their seats, the rest of the attendees happily rose to their feet in a standing ovation supporting Princess Kate.

Charlotte watched with pride a beaming smile on her face, as her mom smiled and waved, addressing the crowd. Kate hasn’t been seen much in public lately due to her cancer diagnosis and both the audience and her daughter were deeply moved by her appearance.

The pair were seen having a good time throughout the day. Another photo captured the mother-daughter duo looking at each other and smiling after Charlotte returned to the seats from a short break.

The royal family previously attended Wimbledon

In 2023, Kate attended Wimbledon with Prince William, Prince George and Charlotte. Prince Louis has yet to make an appearance at the sporting event and may join his parents and siblings as he gets a bit older, as both George and Charlotte were 8 years old during their first match.

Kate seemed to be in good spirits during the match and it was clear from the photos that all three of them were having a nice time. While the box is typically off-limits for children, exceptions are made for the royal family.

“She seemed to look no different from the last Wimbledon. It felt like she is back,” Karwai Tang, the photographer who captured the sweet moment, previously told PEOPLE of Kate’s return. “For them to cheer and clap when they came in was a great support for her. Wimbledon had been waiting with bated breath for her to return and she was back.”

Prince William and Prince George were not at Wimbledon

If you noticed the absence of William and George at Wimbledon, it’s because they were at another sporting event. That’s right! The princes were at the Olympiastadion Berlin in Germany to watch the European Championship final.

The soccer match had Spain going against England, where Spain ultimately came out on top with a score of 2-1. William is not only a huge follower of the sport, but he’s also the president of the Football Association and was hoping to pull a win out for England.

Before the match, William shared to X (formerly known as Twitter), “We are so proud of you all @england, just one last push to finish the job! Go out there and show the world what you’re made of. We believe. W.”
