74 picks came and went last night with the first two rounds of the 2024 MLB Draft . That's nothing though compared to the mammoth amount of picks that will be made between today and tomorrow. Rounds 3-10 are on tap today, while Rounds 11-20 will be on slate for Tuesday.

Despite many of the best players in this year's draft class having already been selected, there are still 28 top-100 prospects, including three top-50 prospects still on the board. This could be a make or break draft for several clubs looking to get some mid-round value.

Here's a full recap of Day 2 of the 2024 MLB Draft.

What is the MLB Draft format?

The MLB Draft works like most other drafts, but there are a few differences in order to help competitive balance. The most obvious example would be the Competitive Balance Rounds that take place between the first and second round as well as the second and third round.

Essentially, qualifying teams – the ten MLB teams from the smallest markets and the ten MLB teams with the least revenue produced – will each get an extra draft pick either in Competitive Balance Round A (between Rounds 1 & 2) or Competitive Balance Round B (between Rounds 2 & 3). As of today, these rounds have already taken place at the 2024 draft, but there are other Competitive Balance Rounds still to come.

Teams that qualify for these extra picks are also granted either $500,000 or $1 million extra in international spending money. This year, the teams that were given Competitive Balance selections were as follows: Milwaukee, Arizona, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Colorado, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee again, the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota, Miami, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Oakland. Of those 13 selections, six were made in Competitive Balance Round A.

Teams can also earn extra draft selections through compensation picks. When a team that qualifies for Competitive Balance selections loses a free agent to a large-market team that grants them a contract worth more than $50 million, the small-market team will earn a pick at the start of Competitive Balance Round A. This year, the Minnesota Twins were granted such a pick after losing starting pitcher Sonny Gray to the St. Louis Cardinals during the offseason.

That's not to say that big-market teams can't also earn these picks. If a team does not qualify for Competitive Balance selections but did not exceed the luxury tax threshold during the previous season, the team will still be rewarded a pick during Competitive Balance Round B if they lost a free agent to a $50 million-plus contract. The Los Angeles Angels were granted such a pick this year after losing Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers.

Even if a team exceeds the luxury tax threshold, they'll still earn Competitive Balance Round selections between the fourth and fifth rounds, as is the case for the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays this year.
