The deadline to file federal taxes for anyone who lives in Washington, Kent or Providence counties in Rhode Island is today, July 15, and today is the deadline to file state tax returns for everyone in Rhode Island.

The extended deadline is a result of federally declared disasters from storms earlier this year.

According to data from the state:

    • 652,772 personal income tax returns had been filed with the state as of last Friday. The same time last year, 650,388 returns had been filed.
    • 452,036 income tax refunds have been issued
    • Those state income tax refunds total $353 million

Here are the five things to know about the extended tax deadlines:

    What are all the deadlines?

    • The state tax-filing deadline is July 15, 2024 , for everyone in the state.
    • The federal deadline is July 15, 2024, for people who live in Providence, Kent and Washington counties .
    • The federal deadline for everyone else in the state was April 15, 2024.
    • Quarterly estimated tax payments normally due Jan. 16, April 15 and June 17
    • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns (normally due Jan. 31 and April 30)
    • Calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due March 15, 2024
    • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due April 15, 2024.
    • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due May 15, 2024.
    • Quarterly tax payments submitted by July 15 will not be subject to penalties.

There are multiple free filing options still available, depending on your income level

There are two program still operating that offer free options for tax filing this year: a volunteer tax preparer program and free software program.

Filed your taxes already? Here's how to track your refund

What are the consequence of late tax filing?

    • If you file your federal or state taxes late, there is no penalty if you are owed a refund .
    • There are penalties if you owe.
    • If you are owed a refund, that check stays in the IRS's coffers for three years (going back to tax day, April 15) before it goes back to the government. That means if you are owed a refund and don't claim it within three years, you forfeit it.

Why the tax deadlines were pushed back

The IRS pushed back the tax deadlines for Providence, Kent and Washington counties following the massive storms in September, December and January, which were declared disasters by the federal government.

Once the IRS pushed back its deadlines, the state followed suit, except pushing back the deadline for everyone in the state.
