Health officials with the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and other departments are investigating severe illnesses linked to Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies.

According to officials with the DPH, and the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these products may contain undisclosed harmful substances, including psychoactive compounds that can cause serious illness, particularly affecting children and teenagers who find them appealing. Despite a recall, these items may still be on shelves in some places, prompting a call for retailers to remove them and consumers to discard any purchased products.

Officials state that these "edibles" are often sold as gummy candies, chocolates, or other snack foods that "frequently appeal to children and teenagers."

As of July 8, 2024, there have been 58 reported illnesses across 27 states, with investigations ongoing, including cases in Georgia. Over half of those affected required hospitalization, and there is one reported death being investigated for potential association with these products. Symptoms reported include hallucinations, erratic movements, cardiovascular issues, gastrointestinal problems, seizures, and other serious effects.

Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming Diamond Shruumz products should seek immediate medical attention or contact the Georgia Poison Center. Healthcare providers are urged to report cases to the Georgia Poison Center as well. For further updates, visit the FDA or CDC websites.
