NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Those who are spending time on the water should do their part to help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) in the state.

While ANS prevention efforts have been successful, the challenge still being seen by the North Dakota Game & Fish Department is that not everyone is abiding by the clean, drain, and dry message.

Things to do around town: July 15-21

Below is a list of things you can do to help reduce the chance of ANS spreading across North Dakota.

    • Boaters should clean, drain, and dry all their equipment after every use.
    • Clean and remove all plants and animals before leaving the recreational area.
    • Drain all the water before leaving designated access points — not draining can be hazardous and can cause negligent transportation of ANS to other locations.
    • Dry everything completely before using it again.

The state’s waters are relatively free of ANS, and only seven are being found. Those include zebra mussels, Eurasian water milfoil, flowering rush, curlyleaf pondweed, and three invasive carp species
