The most popular meteor shower of the year is underway as of July 14, set to put on quite the show in the dark skies above Colorado.

According to the American Meteor Society , the Perseids bring between 50 to 75 meteors per hour to the night sky, with NASA calling the meteor shower the 'best of the year' while also noting that it's known for its "fireballs."

During the meteor shower's peak on the night of August 11 into August 12, the moon will be 44 percent full. That means there will be a bit of natural light pollution regardless of where you're at, but that the show should still be visible if there's no cloud cover. It's also worth noting that the moon is expected to set early on peak night, which will make early hours of August 12 great for viewing the meteors.

After its peak, the shower will keep going until September 1, dwindling in number of visible meteors as time goes on.
