‘Squad’ Democrat Cori Bush trailing Wesley Bell in challenger poll

"Squad" Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is facing a competitive Democratic primary that looks to have heated up even further with the release of a new poll that shows her trailing by 23 points to her challenger, St. Louis attorney Wesley Bell.

The poll, conducted by McLaughlin & Associates and sponsored by pro-Bell Super PAC CCA Action Fund, showed Bell, a Democrat, ahead 56% to 33%. The survey of 300 likely Democratic voters was conducted between June 28 and July 1 via telephone interviews and texting. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.7 percentage points.

In the same poll, Bell was viewed favorably by 70% of respondents to Bush's 50%.

“Cori Bush has wasted her time in Congress to focus on her own fame in the Squad — while her constituents suffer,” Marc Little, a CCA Action Fund spokesman, told the New York Post.

“This poll proves St. Louis wants a representative who will champion our community and its prosperity and safety and who will defend America — not a Cori Bush who wants to tear it all down,” he added.

Bush could be the second Squad lawmaker to lose a Democratic primary this election season after Squad Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lost his race against George Latimer.

Similar to how Latimer portrayed himself against Bowman, Bell is trying to serve as an alternative to the incumbent Bush for voters who are more pro-Israel. Bell said that "Israel has the right to defend itself and go after those who perpetrated those [Oct. 7] attacks," while Bush has sympathized with Palestinians and attacked Israel.

Pro-Israel groups had a large hand in Latimer's race, donating millions to him in his successful pursuit to unseat Bowman and endorsing him. Those same groups are participating in Bell's race, handing him their endorsement and contributing about $1.6 million to his campaign so far.

Latimer and Bell are the top recipients of groups associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee donations, accounting for over 10% of the committee's donations since the start of 2023.

Bell's primary takes place on Aug. 6.
