President Joe Biden is extending Secret Service protection to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent running for the White House in 2024 .

Kennedy, who previously mounted a Democratic primary challenge of Biden before filing as an independent, and his supporters have repeatedly called for a Secret Service detail for the candidate, a call echoed by former President Donald Trump following the attempt on his life on Saturday.

Both Kennedy's uncle, former President John F. Kennedy, and his father, former Sen. Robert Kennedy, were killed by assassins.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the announcement during Monday's White House press briefing.

"We are in a heightened and very dynamic threat environment," he told reporters. "In light of this weekend's events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr."
