YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Multiple dogs infected with the highly contagious parvovirus have been identified in York County this week.

According to the York branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), two unvaccinated dogs recently admitted to their facility became symptomatic and tested positive for a highly contagious disease affecting dogs called canine parvovirus, or “parvo.” A third dog was admitted today and tested positive upon arrival.

The Society says the three dogs were brought in from a small geographic area in York City—two on Madison Avenue and one from King Street. Residents in this area should take extreme caution when walking their dogs and ensure they are fully vaccinated for canine parvovirus. Based on the sudden onset of their symptoms after arrival, the Society believes that they entered our shelter with the virus.

The SPCA says the management of the spread of infectious diseases is an important function of shelter medicine, and their team works tirelessly to quarantine sick animals to get them healthy and ready for adoption while keeping the rest of the shelter population healthy.

Due to the positive cases and the potential for exposure risk, the Society canceled its adoption event scheduled for this past Sunday, July 14, and will remain closed for public dog kennel browsing until Thursday, July 25. Public browsing hours for cats and small animals will still be available Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Society added that their shelter is now at capacity for dogs, so they are planning to host a half-price dog adoption special from Sunday, July 14 through Saturday, July 20 by appointment only. Dogs available for adoption during this special are fully vaccinated, asymptomatic, and very low risk for contracting the virus. To make an adoption appointment, call 717-764-6109 or email info@ycspca.org .
