She was handed the accolade by Leeds Beckett University in recognition of her work on domestic abuse and for services to entertainment .

Her gown reflected the outfits she wore with her 90s pop group.

Mel became an advocate for domestic abuse survivors after fleeing her ten-year marriage to US film producer Stephen Belafonte in 2016.

And the award comes after she also completed a course in Trauma Informed Care at the university this year.

The star, who is dyslexic and left school at 16, told The Sun: “I thought, ‘I can’t just be given a doctorate without going to college and studying’.

“I wanted to earn it — and earn it in Leeds where I am from and live.

    “The course was fascinating.

“I loved being a normal student.”
