Power Ballad, the new film from Sing Street director John Carney, has been acquired by Lionsgate.

Power Ballad is a new film directed by Carney that recently finished filming in Dublin, Ireland. The film stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Chaos Walking).

Lionsgate has announced that the studio has acquired the film for release in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland. A release date has not yet been set.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of John’s movies, and I’ve had my eye on this particular film for some time,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Adam Fogelson. “It combines the best of John’s immense creative talents with a marketable concept and an incredible cast. I couldn’t be happier that he and the rest of the team have entrusted us with it.”

Carney added, “I am so delighted this film, which has been in my heart for so long, has found its home. Musically themed films are meant to be watched together, and what better studio than Lionsgate to bring this movie to the world in the way it was intended: with a crowd, in the dark, next to strangers who, for a few hours, become friends.”

What else do we know about Power Ballad?

Power Ballad “focuses on a talented but past-his-prime wedding singer (Rudd) and a young rockstar (Jonas) who uses the wedding singer’s songwriting prowess to revitalize his own career,” according to the logline.

Carney — known for making 2007’s Once, 2013’s Begin Again, 2016’s Sing Street, and, most recently, 2023’s Flora and Son — co-wrote the screenplay alongside Peter McDonald. He also produces the movie with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story and Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan for Treasure Entertainment.

30WEST and Screen Ireland financed and executive produced Power Ballad.
