Black Labrador Going Through 'Teenage Phase' Is the Definition of Unbothered

Like children, dogs undergo stages where they test their parents’ patience. Although these can be challenging times, it’s important to remember that they are simply trying the waters and learning their boundaries. Their innocence and pure hearts make their mishaps easy to forgive, as we all make mistakes when learning.

This beautiful Labrador might be a good girl most of the time, but she put herself into a precarious spot she couldn’t escape. See where mom found her in this video shared on July 13:

Although having a puppy can be taxing, having a teenage dog can be even more challenging. Once they reach the stage where they feel bold and outgoing, they can get themselves into even bigger trouble. It’s not that they’re trying to be bad; they are simply learning what the world is all about. Unfortunately, that sometimes means they end up in situations they can’t escape -like jumping onto the dining room table with no way down. That’s where beautiful Eva’s (@ vonessendogs ) mom discovered her this morning for the first time. While she may know she’s messed up, she’s still happy to be rescued. Hopefully, after being stuck there for a while, it will be the last time Mom finds her in this spot. But it is certainly not impossible. I had a dog who occasionally did this for no apparent reason for almost 14 years.

How to Stop Dogs From Counter-Surfing

The Best Friends Animal Society recommends teaching dogs the “ Leave it Command ” for counter-surfing prevention . When this command is used correctly, dogs learn they will be rewarded for their positive behavior instead of feeling compelled to steal whatever we have. If they are already jumping, they recommend using the “Off” command to help reinforce the behaviors we wish to see. Using a treat, they suggest luring them off the table. When they comply, and their feet hit the ground, we should reinforce this with a yes or a click and a high-value treat.

This mischievous behavior ad didn’t surprise pet parents. Viewer @joey_theblacklab responded, “I thought you were going to say -when mum has to tell everyone the Labrador isn’t for dinner.” Ha! That’s also true. Another person shared, “I can honestly say this is believable because I have photos of mine on the table. He went from a stool to the settee to the table, lol. I was only out of the room for 2 seconds.” I’ve been there myself.

Although we may not want to see this behavior regularly, it’s hard not to laugh when it happens for the first time. Our four-legged clowns always know how to make us smile, even when they’re a bit naughty.
