Disaster assistance reaches more than $5 million for those affected by severe weather in West Virginia in April 2024

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — More than $5 million was approved for homeowners and renters who were affected by severe storms in 11 West Virginia counties in early April 2024.

Residents of Fayette , Nicholas, Kanawha, Boone, Cabell, Lincoln, Marshall, Ohio, Putnam, Wayne and Wetzel counties who were affected by severe storms in West Virginia from April 2, 2024 through April 6, 2024 will be able to apply for federal disaster assistance.

More than 2,129 people registered for FEMA assistance to date, and more than $5.02 million in disaster assistance was approved for more than 961 survivors of the severe weather that occurred at the beginning of April 2024. Many Disaster Recovery Centers are open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Out of the approved $5.02 million, $3.19 million was approved for housing assistance, and $1.83 million was approved for other needs assistance. In addition, more than $618,000 was approved for Serious Needs Assistance, and $883,000 will be used for Housing Displacement Assistance.

Out of the more than 100 disaster loan applications that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) received, mainly for houses, more than $1.3 million was approved.

Those who are looking to receive assistance can apply by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) or by going to the Disaster Assistance website , and the deadline to apply for disaster assistance is July 22, 2024.

Disaster Recovery Center locations can be found here , and if there is limited internet access, people can go to their local public library, which usually has public internet access.

If it is not possible to visit one of the Disaster Recovery Centers, people can call FEMA’s toll-free phone line at 800-621- FEMA (3362), which is available seven days a week from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. Those who use a relay service like video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or other related services, can give FEMA the necessary number.
