Ballon d’or 2024 Power Rankings Post Euro & Copa
After a thrilling finish to this summer’s UEFA Euro 2024 and Copa América with Spain and Argentina the two respective champions, it is time to look ahead to how these tournaments affected the 2024 Ballon d’or race. Let’s rank who is most likely to win football’s most prestigious individual award this year!
10. Bukayo Saka
A fantastic season for the Arsenal star with 20 goals and 14 assists in all competitions leads to him earning a consolation prize on this list. His performance at the 2024 Euro’s cemented his place on the international stage as well as he was far and away England’s best player in the tournament.
9. Florian Wirtz
Although Germany’s Euro’s finish was slightly disappointing, Florian Wirtz’s season for Bayer Leverkusen was anything but. He was at the heart of their 52 game unbeaten streak and led them to winning the Bundesliga as well as the DFB-Pokal. Wirtz just missed out on the Europa League title as well, losing to Atalanta in the final.
8. Dani Carvajal
An extremely underrated piece of the Real Madrid season, Carvajal deserves his flowers with a club campaign in which he provided key goals and assists as well as consistently elite defending en route to a Champions League Trophy. No doubt winning this year’s Euro’s with Spain will also boost his Balloon d’or stock.
7. Kylian Mbappe
Somehow, the Balloon d’or has still evaded Kylian Mbappe. It is unlikely that changes this year. Although he had a good individual season with a League 1 Title for PSG, the lack of impact in the Euro’s with France likely keeps him lower on the list. Not to mention, a lack of a Champions League Trophy for PSG as well.
6. Lautaro Martinez
What a season Martinez has had with 42 goals and assists in 53 appearances this year. His finishing woes haunted him in a few moments but scoring critical goals to help Argentina win this year’s Copa América and Inter Milan win the Serie A solidifies his spot in this ranking. Few can say they won both their league title and a major international tournament in the same year. Not to mention his Copa Golden Boot!
5. Harry Kane
European Golden Shoe winner with 36 goals in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich. Shared Golden Boot winner at the Euro’s for England. Although he was a bit underwhelming in this past tournament largely due to Gareth Southgate’s tactics , the stats don’t lie and all Kane did this year was score.
4. Toni Kroos
Orchestrating an elite Real Madrid team to its 15th UCL and his own personal sixth, Kroos had a fairytale club career ending. Although the same wasn’t possible for his German international career, he had a very solid showing at the Euro’s as well and there’s likely to be some goodwill from the voters as a result of his retirement.
3. Jude Bellingham
This is where the list starts to get realistic in terms of actual winners if we’re being honest. With a fantastic club season where he scored significant goals, especially in the earlier part of the year, Bellingham winning the Euro’s might have been just enough to win the Ballon d’or. Now, it’s definitely a bit of a longer shot.
2. Vinicius Jr.
Vini Jr. provided clutch goal contribution after clutch goal contribution for Real Madrid especially when it mattered most, the UEFA Champions League. Genuinely unstoppable this year for club, a lackluster Brazilian Copa América will likely be too much to overcome for the 24-year-old superstar.
1. Rodri
Rodri’s impact as a defensive midfielder is tremendously rare. Not often will there be a player able to dictate a team’s possession but then also provide immense goals and assists on a consistent basis. His performances resulting in a hard-fought Manchester City EPL Title and a Spanish European Championship should be enough for him to secure the Ballon d’or.
