A sweet Dachshund mix was rescued outside a Walgreens with gentle care and given the sweetest name.

On July 14, 2024, TikTok user Street Heart Stx (@streetheartstx) shared a video of a little Dachshund who was found wandering outside, scared and alone. But not anymore. Take a look!

Calling him little Reese’s Pieces for now 🤎 This little guy was running between Walgreens and a gas station. He was too scared to let anyone help him but thankfully it didn’t take him long to fall for some hot dogs. After I got him home, I could tell he was still very unsure about receiving any affection so we’re letting him decompress and taking it slow. If we don’t find anyone searching for him, he’ll be safe with us!

In a minute-and-a-half video , a Texas foster mom who rescues dogs carefully encourages a Dachshund to accept her help.

"This little dog was curled up outside a Walgreens," the text on the video reads as a sweet brown Dachshund wanders in the parking lot, eating up the treats that have been gently tossed his way.

The woman is gently encouraging the pup to "come here" while being good about keeping her distance so the dog doesn't run away.

"People said he wouldn't get close enough to grab, so I brought my trap out," the video explained, as the woman placed a dog crate close by, added a comfortable blanket, and gave the dog some special treats to encourage it to go inside.

"I loaded it with hot dogs and leftover pizza from last night," the video explains.

The dog goes inside the crate after sampling some of the food, and you can tell he's scared. Hopefully, he quickly understands he's off to somewhere better.

"Calling him little Reese’s Pieces for now," the video's caption reads. "This little guy was running between Walgreens and a gas station. He was too scared to let anyone help him but thankfully it didn’t take him long to fall for some hot dogs."

When she got him into the crate and took him home, she did what she could to help him feel better.

"After I got him home, I could tell he was still very unsure about receiving any affection so we’re letting him decompress and taking it slow," she shared. "If we don’t find anyone searching for him, he’ll be safe with us!"

In the comments, people shared their feelings about the sweet but scared pup, hoping they could find his home.

"That's someone's baby," one person wrote.

"Such a cutie. You don't normally see dogs like that on the street

"He looks healthy," another person wrote. "Definitely someone’s baby."

"That’s definitely someone’s baby," another wrote. "I hope they can find him through this app. Keep us updated. Thank you for your kindness."

Ugh, the terror he probably felt when the trap closed," wrote someone else. "Please just love on him. Such a beautiful creature."

"That's a dapple Dachshund. Someone is definitely missing that baby," explained another viewer.

What Should You Do If You Find a Stray Dog?

According to the Humane Society of the United States , if you come across a stray pet, especially if you're in the car, the best thing to do is to think of safety.

"A strange, frightened, and possibly sick or injured animal can behave unpredictably. A sudden move on your part, even opening your car door, can spook them and cause them to bolt — possibly right onto the highway," the organization explains. "If the animal looks or acts threatening, or if you feel uneasy about the situation, stay in your car."

From there, if possible and if safe to do so, you can try and restrain the animal. "Create a barrier or use a carrier, leash, piece of cloth, or length of rope to keep the animal in the area," the organization adds.

"Signal approaching vehicles to slow down if you cannot confine the animal, or divert traffic around them if they appear to be injured and is still on the roadway."
