Who won the Home Run Derby in 2024? Full results, HR totals, highlights from MLB dinger contest

The Dodgers have a storied history of legendary players and plenty of wins, but the Home Run Derby on Monday night marked a first for the franchise.

Teoscar Hernandez, who signed to a one-year deal in the shadow of the Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto additions in the offseason, went from the last player in the derby to the last player standing. The former Blue Jays slugger narrowly outlasted Bobby Witt Jr. in the finals to capture his first and the Dodgers' first Home Run Derby crown.

Hernandez hit the fewest home runs of the four semifinalists in the first round, and he barely survived a scare from Alec Bohm when he won a swing-off in the semifinals. A stretch of eight home runs in 57 seconds in the finals put Hernandez in good position in the finals, but Witt did everything he could to make a run at the $1 million prize.

After a slow start himself, Witt caught fire and entered bonus time with 11 home runs to Hernandez's 14. Down to his final out, Witt blasted one 425-foot home run that earned him an additional out, and he would hit one more to set up the most pivotal swing of the night. Witt's attempt to tie Hernandez fell mere feet short of the wall, and Hernandez exhaled knowing he just added his name to the long list of power bats to win the Home Run Derby.

Hernandez doesn't share the notoriety of his teammates Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, or Ohtani. That doesn't mean he's not a powerful hitter in his own right. The 31-year-old, once traded to the Blue Jays for Francisco Liriano, has hit at least 25 home runs in each of the past four 162-game seasons and appears to be on track to cross that mark again with 19 homers through 95 games.

Hernandez and the Dodgers have much bigger goals, but a Home Run Derby win for Los Angeles' fourth- or even fifth-most intimidating bat underlines how much talent the team has on its hands.

10:54 p.m. — Teoscar Hernandez wins the Home Run Derby! What a finish! Witt hits two home runs, including one down to his final out, but his last swing misses by mere feet and gives the Dodgers slugger a win and a $1 million prize.

10:52 p.m. — Witt catches fire and finishes his two minutes with 11! He needs at least three in bonus time. Here we go.

10:50 p.m. — Witt takes his timeout with 4 home runs and 70 seconds left, which sounds troubling but is actually better than the position Hernandez was in at his timeout. Let's see if he can put together a run here...

10:44 p.m. — That was exactly what Hernandez needed. He tacks on three home runs to a much more questionable 11 home runs and sets the standard for Witt.

10:41 p.m. — Hernandez had a pretty fun final 57 seconds with eight home runs to bring his total to 11. Let's see what he can cook up in bonus time.

10:38 p.m. — Hernandez takes a late timeout with 4 home runs. Despite getting to the finals, he has been inconsistent tonight.

10:34 p.m. — Michael Buffer is introducing Hernandez and Witt, because why not.

10:28 p.m. — Bohm's second swing is a home run, but that's all he gets! Teoscar Hernandez will face Bobby Witt Jr. in a very blue Home Run Derby final round.

10:25 p.m. — Three swings, two home runs for Hernandez. Bohm needs at least two to stay alive.

10:22 p.m. — We're going to a swing-off!

10:21 p.m. — Bohm catches fire again and heads to bonus time tied with Hernandez? His attempt at No. 15 went just foul, but he's at least ensured a swing-off and has a great chance to advance here.

10:19 p.m. — Bohm heads to timeout with just 3 homers. The pitching was not ideal.

10:15 p.m. — A disappointing bonus round leaves Hernandez with 14, and here comes Alec Bohm for the first time in nearly two hours.

10:12 p.m. — Hernandez recovered very well with 10 homers out of the timeout and enters bonus time with 13. A few more could make this a very formidable round for the Dodgers slugger.

10:10 p.m. — Teoscar Hernandez takes his timeout at the halfway point with just 3 home runs. He looks like a mess.

10:03 p.m. — Ramirez is shut out, and Witt easily advances!

10:01 p.m. — Ramirez hit a real drought near the end of his three minutes but keeps himself in contention with 12 home runs. He needs at least five in bonus time.

9:58 p.m. — Ramirez takes an early break with 1:48 remaining, but he has just 4 home runs. Witt is in strong position.

9:54 p.m. — Well, that wasn't what Witt wanted. He posts a zero in bonus time and is in for a tense few minutes as Jose Ramirez aims for 18.

9:52 p.m. — Witt was getting under balls early on, but he caught fire out of the timeout and finishes with 17. That's an impressive number. Let's see what he can do in bonus time.

9:49 p.m. — Witt needed some time to settle in, and he's sitting on 6 home runs with 1:40 on the clock.

9:44 p.m. — So, it will be Alec Bohm vs. Teoscar Hernandez and Bobby Witt Jr. vs. Jose Ramirez in the semifinals. An all-NL matchup and an all-AL Central matchup.

9:40 p.m. — Henderson swung at some pretty questionable pitches in bonus time and bows out with 11. A very disappointing performance from the home run leader of the group. Teoscar Hernandez moves on.

9:39 p.m. — Henderson got ahold of a few of them, but he's sitting on just 11 home runs entering bonus time. He needs eight more to force a swing-off.

9:36 p.m. — Gunnar Henderson went almost a full minute without a home run, but he gets up to 4 homers before his timeout. It's still going to take a huge effort to get to the semifinals.

9:32 p.m. — Ozuna earns the extra out but can't take advantage and bows out with 16 home runs. Witt advances, and Gunnar Henderson will need at least 19 here to advance. If not, it'll be Teoscar Hernandez.

9:29 p.m. — The home runs came in bunches for Ozuna, who looked out of a rhythm at times before locking right back in. He's taking 14 home runs into bonus time.

9:26 p.m. — Marcell Ozuna started hot, including a 473-foot blast, but he goes into his timeout with just 4 homers. He still does have 1:40 on the clock.

9:22 p.m. — Ramirez is heading to the semifinals! He ties Bohm with 21 and keeps Witt's status up in the air. Adolis Garcia is eliminated in the first round for the second consecutive year.

9:18 p.m. — Ramirez slowed down a bit at the end of his three minutes and finishes with 15, so bonus time will be critical. Anything less than five home runs will send Witt to the semifinals.

9:16 p.m. — Jose Ramirez is off to a really impressive start with 10 home runs and 1:25 on the clock. Four of his last six swings were home runs.

9:11 p.m. — There will be no third Home Run Derby win for Alonso this year. The Mets slugger finishes with just 12 and is the first hitter eliminated. Alec Bohm is moving on.

9:09 p.m. — Alonso heads to the bonus round with 9 homers. There was very little to be positive about from those three minutes.

9:06 p.m. — Pete Alonso takes his timeout with only 5 home runs and 1:37 left. He and Dave Jauss have not connected well so far.

8:57 p.m. — Wow, Hernandez quickly earns a fourth out with a bomb and hits six home runs in bonus time. He has 19 and is still in this.

8:54 p.m. — Hernandez has only 13 home runs entering bonus time. Things continue to look up for Bohm and Witt.

8:51 p.m. — Teoscar Hernandez started out with a couple impressive blasts, but he's sitting on only 6 home runs exactly halfway through his three minutes.

8:47 p.m. — That was not the finish Garcia wanted. He somehow finishes with just 18 after such a hot start and faces a long road to advancing. This is great news for Alec Bohm, who entered with more distant odds than anyone.

8:44 p.m. — Hometown favorite Adolis Garcia was mashing, but he cooled down a bit at the end of his three minutes. With 18, bonus time will be absolutely crucial.

8:37 p.m. — Witt can be proud of his performance in bonus time, taking advantage of that extra out, but he still finishes behind Bohm with 20. It's not a head-to-head matchup, so both Bohm and Witt will patiently await their fate.

8:34 p.m. — Witt does find a rhythm after the timeout but only wraps his three minutes with 16 home runs. Bonus time will be key.

8:32 p.m. — Bobby Witt Jr. got off to a rough start and has 5 homers with 1:36 remaining. He'll hope for a Bohm-like resurgence here.

8:28 p.m. — The total for Bohm is 21. He'll have to wait a bit to find out if he has a chance to move on.

8:25 p.m. — Bohm caught a rhythm out of the timeout, quickly sending four out to the left field stands. He's heading to bonus time with 20 home runs. A much better finish than start, which isn't unexpected.

8:23 p.m. — Bohm has 7 home runs at his timeout, which comes with 1:33 left on the clock.

8:22 p.m. — Bohm is underway!

8:20 p.m. — The pre-derby festivities are done, but we're still waiting to get underway. Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm will lead off whenever the first round gets underway.

8:12 p.m. — Ingrid Andress delivered the national anthem, and let's just say it was not her night. Onto the home runs...

8:09 p.m. — The eight participants have been introduced, and the national anthem is now getting started.

8:04 p.m. — In case anyone was wondering about how weather will affect the baseballs tonight, it won't. It's 101 degrees in Arlington, but the roof is closed.

7:58 p.m. — The hitters will go in order of home runs from fewest to most, so Alec Bohm will start the night and Gunnar Henderson will finish the first round.

7:40 p.m. — Gunnar Henderson will be using a Scooby Doo bat in his first derby.

7:10 p.m. — Meanwhile, outside Globe Life Field...

6:45 p.m. — Adolis Garcia is the hometown favorite in Arlington, and he's bringing the bling with an "El Bombi" chain.

Home Run Derby bracket 2024

The Home Run Derby is shifting away from its typical bracket format this year. Instead, the top four home run hitters from the first round will advance to the semifinals, where a bracket will then be formed based on first round totals.
