AN expert has revealed the little-known signs your car is overheating – and what to do if your motor gets too hot this summer.

But, drivers have been warned of important signs to watch out for to prevent their vehicles from over heating.

The useful tips were shared by James Granton, a motoring expert from Zego Car Insurance .

He revealed common indicators a hike in temperatures have wreaked havoc on your motor.

Firstly, the temperature gauge on the dashboard will go into the red zone – or a warning light will flash.

In some cases, steam or smoke may even be spotted rising from under the bonnet.

Meanwhile, a sweet odor might signal leaking coolant, and a burning smell could mean oil is overheating.

STEPS TO TAKE

James advised drivers to immediately switch off the air conditioning to limit pressure on the engine.

While it may seem odd, whacking on the heating can actually help – as this pulls heat away from the engine.

It is also important to pull over in a safe location to get help.

Once this is possible, turn off the engine to prevent further damage.

After stopping your car, the motor whizz advised waiting between 15 and 30 minutes before cracking open the bonnet.

This will allow time for parts to cool down, and steam to clear.

When you can, check the coolant level in the reservoir tank, and add more if it is low.

Any puddles under the car could indicate a radiator or hose leak – if this is the case it’s best to ring for professional mechanical help.

• It’s also wise to have your cooling system inspected during routine maintenance checks.

Prepare for Emergencies

• Keep a spare bottle of coolant and a bottle of water in your car for emergencies.
• Additionally, consider carrying a roadside assistance kit, including warning triangles, a high-visibility vest, and a first aid kit.

To prevent disaster striking in the future, it’s vital to keep an eye on the temperature gauge – especially on long journeys.

Regularly checking the vehicle’s radiator, hoses and cooling components for leaks or faults can also help.

This includes monitoring coolant, oil and brake fluid levels.
