CONWAY, S.C.– It’s already been a busy year for Horry County Animal Care Center’s Conway location, where 166 adoptions have been made.

But officials are hoping to create even more happy endings, collaborating with PetSmart in Myrtle Beach for National Adoption Week, which ends Sunday.

As of Monday morning, the shelter was housing 233 animals — putting it at capacity. Officials say new intakes will be processed on a case-by-case basis, with injured ones getting priority.

“Our end goal is to always get dogs, cats into homes where they can live the rest of their lives,” she said,” kennel supervisor Naomi Jenkins said.

Horry County spokeswoman Adrianna Seals said the Animal Care Center is always looking for volunteers or potential adopters. Teaming up with organizations like PetSmart help raise awareness, especially in the summer months.

Seals said more than 100 dogs and cats are ready to go home.

“We are approaching the 50% mark for our entire population being available for adoptions,” she said.

Animal Care Center adoptions are fee-free, and all pets are current on vaccines, spaying and neutering and microchipping.

An adoption event is planned from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at 1301 Oak Forest Lane.
