E-Bikes Get Approval for Lake Tahoe Trails

Lake Tahoe, known for its mountain biking trails, is set to welcome off-road electric bikes. Federal officials have approved a plan allowing e-bikes on 106 miles of Tahoe’s trails, previously off-limits because they are motorized, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. This plan also includes creating 45 miles of new trails to connect different segments, enhancing the trail network for both commuting and recreational use.

Bicycle advocates are excited, believing this will help make Tahoe a more bikeable region. Drew Bray, executive director of the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association, told the Chronicle the plan will provide more outdoor opportunities without needing cars.

The plan affects the U.S. Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, which oversees 154,000 acres and 362 miles of trails. These trails are heavily visited and connect various areas like neighborhoods, ski resorts, and beaches.

The new access applies only to Class I e-bikes, which are pedal-assisted and have a top speed of 20 mph. Class II and Class III e-bikes, which have higher speeds and different mechanisms, will still be prohibited.

The final environmental assessment document will be released in August, with new e-bike access expected to follow shortly after.
